The S12 postcode of Sheffield is situated south-east from Sheffield City Centre. Gleadless is at its most westerly point, then reaching out east it encompasses Hackenthorpe and south it includes Ridgeway. Housing in this postcode varies greatly depending upon each area. Gleadless has a very high percentage of social housing consisting largely of flats and maisonettes, whereas Ridgeway has a high number of large detached homes.

As already mentioned Gleadless has a lot of social housing available, there are also however, a number of newer build properties within the privately-owned Bellway development at Gleadless Townend. The transport links are excellent due to it being on the Supertram blue and purple routes. There are three tram stops serving the Gleadless area: Hollinsend, Gleadless Townend and White Lane.

House prices are very reasonable within this postcode. It is a popular area with young families as you can get a much larger property here for the same price than in other more expensive parts of Sheffield.

With the westerly part of the area being so close to the city and centre and having such good transport links, it's not an issue getting into town for a more cosmopolitan shopping experience. Further east of the area brings you close to the Crystal Peaks shopping centre, where you can find many popular high street names such as: Argos, Boots, Burton, Clarks, Claire's, Next, M&S and TKMaxx.

In regard to eating out, there tends to more choice towards the Ridgeway side of S12. Here you can find traditional English country pubs serving traditional pub food. The Swan Inn is a family run, 300 year old pub which serves up a delicious menu of homemade food seven days a week in a lively, traditional pub atmosphere. They also offer a selection of homemade pies.

The Old Vicarage can also be found in Ridgeway and if fine dining is your thing, then this place is most definitely worth a visit. Having once held a Michelin star, acclaimed food critics from The Guardian, The Times and many other publications have consistently given the place rave reviews.

You will not be short of takeaways in S12: Rubeez and Bay of Bengal amongst others, offer Indian cuisine and Royal Wong's is a popular Chinese takeaway. Elif 2 is a Turkish restaurant with good reviews.
