About this property
This remarkable three-bedroom house is nestled among the greenery of Tibbets Close, a peaceful residential street in Wandsworth, close to Wimbledon Village and Common. It was built between 1961 and 1963, and received a 'Good Design in Housing' award when completed. Inside are plenty of original mid-century details, includingsleek black weatherboardingand teak-panelled window frames. French doors unfold from the living space onto a woodland garden that brims with established trees and shrubbery. Southfields Underground station is a 12-minute walk away and provides quick routes into central London.
The Tour
This exceptional house has been carefully preserved in a way that resolutely upholds its mid-century integrity. The approach is via a lush communal garden filled with established chestnut trees and hedgerows; a paved pathway intersects to the front of the house, where sleek black weatherboards contrast with original teak windows and doors.
On entry, an entrance hall leads to a wonderfully bright living space at the rear of the house. The rear wall is fully glazed, with teak-framed windows and French doors that unfold onto a leafy garden beyond. One part of the window frame has been intricately painted by the artist owner, one of several moments of artistic flair that lend the house a unique charm. The original parquet flooring, laid in a striking geometric pattern, runs underfoot.
A kitchen sits at the front of the house, with black and white tiling underfoot and large windows providing wonderful views of the greenery outside. Here, cabinets, a windowsill and a hob surround are painted in original designs by the current owner, and there is room for appliances as well as a small dining table.
A staircase - painted deep blue and with an original teak bannister - ascends to the first floor. Built-in storage in the hallway is useful for linens or towels, and has again been brought to life with hand-painted decoration.
The principal bedroom, currently used as a studio, is filled with light from windows that capture views over the garden at the front of the house. It has integrated storage and elegantly aged blue-painted timber floorboards. There is an additional bedroom on the first floor, with tranquil treetop views of the rear garden. A third room is currently used as storage, but is also suited for use as a bedroom or home office.
A bathroom is also found on this level, where a blend of colours, materials and textures combine to create a unique space. Timber panelling washed in teal contrasts with white tiling, and an alcove above the sink has been intricately painted to depict the human form. The shower is panelled with stainless-steel sheets, bringing a industrial feel to the space, and a door painted in warm red and orange tones with fine brushstrokes provides a wonderful juxtaposition of styles.
Outdoor Space
A beautiful garden to the rear of the house provides a calming sanctuary to retreat to. Acers and other established trees are found here, a medley of vibrant, slightly varying shades of green.
At the front of the house, a carefully maintained communal lawn is bordered by mature trees and shrubbery, which lend privacy. In the centre of the lawn, there is a magnificent chestnut tree.
The Area
Tibbets Close is just a five-minute walk from Wimbledon Common, a serene spot perfect for a morning run or an afternoon stroll. Encompassing over 1,100 acres, the Common has tearooms and a museum, nine ponds, tracks, bridleways and cycle paths. It is also used for horse riding, via stables in Wimbledon Village.
The green expanses of Richmond Park and Putney Common are also close by, as is Wimbledon Park. Wimbledon Tennis is a five-minute walk away, with all the drama of its Centre Court.
Wimbledon Village has a wonderful selection of places to dine and shop. Familiar names are joined by a host of independents, including The Dog and Fox, 'The Alex' (known for its hearty Sunday roasts), and Chango, which serves empanadas, tapas and wine. Southfields' centre is also easily reached and has a branch of Marks and Spencer, along with a range of high street favourites.
Elsewhere, DropShot Coffee on Wimbledon Park Road is the perfect place to get a caffeine fix, while The Telegraph pub is a great spot for a summer’s day refreshment. Local favourite Home SW15 is located on nearby Upper Richmond Road.
There are a number of excellent schooling options in the area, including Bishop Gilpin CofE Primary School, Ricards Lodge High School, Putney High and Wimbledon High School.
Southfields Underground station (District line) is a 16-minute walk away and offers easy access to Clapham Junction, Kensington and central London. There are also several bus stops close to the house.
