About this property
Completed in 2019 to a design by Lab Architects, this three-storey maisonette lies in Putney, minutes from Richmond Park and Wimbledon Common. Conceived with a fluid, open-plan layout, the interiors are defined by generous volumes, concealed storage and abundant natural light. A neutral palette of white walls and light-toned oak floorboards draws attention to the architectural features and verticality of these spaces, their livability enhanced by excellent insulation, a soft water filtration system, and underfloor heating throughout.
The Tour
Set back from the street, the house is accessed via a gated entrance. A shared front patio provides a welcoming threshold, complete with individual cycle storage and an integrated bin and storage shed.
The striking building comprises six contemporary maisonettes arranged in a linear composition and framed by mature trees. The gable-end façade is articulated with sharp, geometric lines, clad in vertical timber slats and punctuated by expansive floor-to-ceiling glazing.
Entry to the house is via a private door and staircase leading to the second floor. A bright central hall connects all parts of the house. The plan opens to the front into an expansive reception space, set beneath dramatic double-height pitched ceilings. Bathed in natural light from a full-height gable end window, the interior is thoughtfully arranged to accommodate the kitchen, dining, and living areas. Vertical wood slats rising along the façade cast shifting patterns of light and shadow that evolve through the day.
The kitchen is arranged in an L-shape configuration with newly installed, light-grey cabinets and wall-mounted cupboards. Marble countertops and splashbacks add a subtle detail and visual depth. The oven and hob are by AEG; the fridge/freezer and microwave are by Zanussi.
The front section can accommodate a large dining table and soft seating. A glass partition wall provides subtle glimpses into the stairwell, while doors slide open onto a generous south-westerly balcony - a perfect spot for watching the sunset.
To the rear and across the hall is a double bedroom, also currently used as a study. A large window with a Juliet balcony frames serene views of the treetops, while a large built-in wardrobe provides plenty of storage space. A pocket door connects to a well-appointed en suite, with a walk-in shower, mirrored storage units and marble flooring. The hall is complete with a utility/cupboard that is big enough to fit a washer/dryer.
A contemporary oak staircase rises to the upper level, topped by skylights that flood the landing and hallway below with natural light. Set beneath a pitched roof, the principal bedroom is positioned to the rear and has a neutral palette. Roof lights and two slim windows behind the bed allow soft, ambient light to filter in.
Across the landing and to the front is a mezzanine/office space that overlooks the living room below, with views towards Richmond Park. Bright and peaceful, it has plenty of space for a large desk and additional furniture.
A second bathroom is accessed from the landing. Finished with dark-blue ceilings, half-tiled walls and built-in wood shelving, the space is complete with a walk-in shower and marble flooring.
The Area
Alton Road is nestled between Richmond Park, Putney Heath, and Wimbledon Common, three of southwest London’s largest green spaces. The amenities of Roehampton Village are a 10-minute walk from the house, with a Little Waitrose for groceries, alongside independent restaurants and cafés. There are excellent pub options too, including the King’s Head Roehampton and the Telegraph, both within easy reach. A local library, a golf course, and a fitness centre are also nearby.
Putney High Street is a short cycle away, with an excellent selection of restaurants and cafés including Tried and True, Home SW15, craft beer shop Ghost Whale and The Duke’s Head by Putney’s idyllic riverside. To the south, Wimbledon Village is an ideal setting for a weekend stroll.
Well-regarded schooling options in the area include Heathmere Primary, Roehampton Church Forest, and Putney High School.
There are several bus routes serving the area that provide easy access to nearby Putney and central London. The nearest train station is Barnes, with trains reaching London Waterloo in around 19 minutes. There is easy access by car to the A3 and free on-street parking.
