Architecture & Interior
This beautifully renovated and styled two-bedroom flat is formed from a part of the ground floor of Decimus Burtons’ original home in St Leonards. Current residents of The Lodge come from a range of backdrops including artists, publishers, craftspeople and designers but they all share a commitment to continuing to improve the building infrastructure and the quality of life for all living within this wonderful building. The building is managed by an external management company with input from the residents who have their voice heard about the improvements which are happening across the entire building.
A lobby from the garden then gives access to the flat which was totally remodelled by a previous owner and has since undergone further improvements by the current owners including electric wiring check, new fuse box, new damp proof course in both bedrooms, new carpets in both bedrooms, bespoke new blinds fitted throughout, new radiators in living room and bedroom 2, new bathroom basin, custom made joinery in the living room, bathroom, bedroom 2. Repainted and decorated throughout.
The Living Room has integral bespoke storage cupboards, distinct space for a dining area, views over the gardens.
The Kitchen has generous storage cupboards with new door furniture, integral fridge freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, eye-level double electric oven, 5 ring gas hob with full width extractor hood. Plenty of light from a large window makes this kitchen beautifully presented.

History
Built in around 1845 by the visionary Decimus Burton who, with his father James were the instigators of the development of St Leonards as the most thriving and fashionable seaside town of its era. St Leonard’s Lodge was originally known as ‘The Cottage’, and for many years was the home of Decimus and after his death The Cottage was extended by his nephew to make it a wonderful honey coloured stone mansion.
The Lodge is a 3-story building constructed from coursed ironstone with a hipped slate roof and distinctive stone quoins and chimney stacks. Alongside The Lodge sits what was a garage for the owner’s Rolls Royce plus chauffeur’s lodgings and is now a private dwelling. The Lodge has performed many functions over the years, including a school, and is now converted into 9 apartments.
In the Neighbourhood
St Leonards continues to thrive as a seaside town attracting people who very often have professional backgrounds in the arts to make it their home. As interesting array of independent restaurants, cafes, shops, a cinema and galleries continue to open and contribute to the unique culture of the town. The Lodge is adjacent to the beautiful St Leonards Gardens, a public park with lovely vistas to the sea. The beach and seafront are a few minutes’ walk from The Lodge as is the heart of St Leonards shopping and entertainment area. For all of these reasons, Maze Hill is one of the most revered and desirable streets with properties very rarely becoming available here.
Transport & Connections
St Leonards Warrior Square Station is within a ten-minute walk from The Lodge which connects to London Victoria, London Charing Cross, London Bridge and Waterloo East as well as, via a change at Ashford the high-speed connection to Kings Cross St Pancras International. Brighton, Gatwick Airport and Ashford International are all easy to access by train. Hastings Old Town can be reached in around 20 minutes by foot. There is free parking along Maze Hill on a first come-first-served basis. There is a private single garage for this property within the grounds of The Lodge.
