Your guide to moving to Sheffield

Why Sheffield is a good place to live

Sheffield is a great place to live for so many reasons. It has a proud industrial history, giving it the nickname The Steel City - but it’s today reimagined as a thriving university city with a cool urban edge.

Set on green rolling hills and 150 miles of waterways (including five rivers), the landscape is a major draw in choosing to live in Sheffield. The UK's fifth largest city has more trees per person than any city in Europe and it’s alive with culture, from theatres and galleries to music festivals and eclectic street art. The nightlife is buzzing and the diverse culinary scene will have your taste buds dancing.

Locals are a friendly bunch and community spirit thrives here, with a local attitude that's forward-thinking, liberal and inclusive. The two universities attract a diverse crowd and make Sheffield one of the top student cities in the country, while strong digital and creative industries make it a hotbed for emerging talent.

Living in Sheffield places you within the dramatic peaks of the Peak District National Park. Scenic trails, winding rivers, quaint villages, cosy pubs - it’s all close at hand as Sheffield truly offers the best of both worlds.

What is Sheffield famous for?

Sheffield is famous for its steel production, with a worldwide reputation for producing high-quality steel and cutlery. While steel production has now declined, the city's legacy in the industry remains a prominent part of its identity.
