The immediate surrounding area is a residential district of individual homes built throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Mazamet's history as a former global centre of the wool trade and once Europe's richest town, has left it with a large number of grand homes in smart residential districts. This particular property in neighbouring Aussillon was commissioned in the mid 20th century by a wool broker. The tree-lined avenues and boulevards are broad and quiet with very little traffic. From the house, the nearby mountains can be seen and a short drive will take you to footpaths and hiking trails up onto the forested hillsides. One of the most popular walks leads from the town centre up the hillside and across a cable suspension footbridge to the ancient fortified village of Hautpoul, once a stronghold of the Cathar community. Besieged by Simon de Montfort in the thirteenth century, it was eventually abandoned and has since become an artistic centre and great destination for a challenging walk with superb views and a delicious treat as your reward. The history of the region is fascinating and if you enjoy castles, legends, folklore, and discovering hidden gems then this is the place for you. Culturally, Occitanie is very rich, with local poetry, music, song and dance being celebrated in almost every village at some point in the year. As for the food culture, well this is the south of France! Every town and village has its speciality. From cassoulet (a rich and meaty bean stew) to vibrant salads, from light goats cheeses to succulent duck dishes, everyone is catered for. There is increasingly excellent and creative provision for vegetarians and vegans, contrary to popular belief!

Located in the region of Occitanie (Midi-Pyrenees) in the south-west of France, the conjoined towns of Aussillon and Mazamet enjoy a fortunate position in a broad valley between two ranges of low mountains, the Montagne Noire and the Monts de Lacaune. The town offers access to almost any outdoor sport you can think of as well as challenging road and off-road cycling, beautiful tours along the twisty mountain roads, plus swimming and other activities in the many local lakes. The municipal swimming pool in Mazamet is modern and well-equipped with a lovely spa and sauna. Aussillon's pool, a short distance from the house, is now in private hands and operating as a health club.
Local clubs and associations bring together people with common interests in a wide range of sports and leisure activities and people are actively encouraged to try something new at the annual sports open day in September. Ask me about your interests, there's sure to be a related club nearby! There is a vibrant arts scene, and the theatre/cinema complex is a real cultural hub.
The nearby golf course of La Barouge is renowned throughout France.

Markets on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday create a sense of community and energy, with traders offering everything from delicious local produce to bric-a-brac and fabrics. During the summer, the Monday farmers' markets bring together local producers who offer cooked dishes as well as fruits and vegetables. Patrons grab a tray, put together a meal from the various stalls and then sit down at communal tables to eat alongside friends, neighbours and total strangers: A great way to meet new people.

Several schools cover all ages from maternelle (age 2) to lycée (age 19).
The modern local hospital is a short drive away and offers excellent care in a range of specialisms.

Further afield, Castres is a local administrative centre with many interesting bars, cafes and restaurants as well as several museums and large squares for passing lazy summer afternoons.
Carcassonne is just the other side of the Montagne Noire, a 45-minute drive. You may know it as France's second most popular tourist destination, for its impressive fairytale castle, but it is also a great place for shopping and strolling through the town. The airport provides convenient links to the UK and other destinations.
Toulouse is approximately 90 minutes away by car or by train and offers a larger airport, as well as a fascinating university city. It's very easy to lose a whole day wandering the historic streets, stopping for the occasional glass of rosé or a nice coffee and a pastry, sampling the delights of the boutiques and international food outlets, museums, theatres and parks.
