Want to keep generations connected? A home with a self-contained annexe can deliver the right amount of togetherness, without compromising your peace and privacy.

An annexe, however, isn’t just for multi-generational living or hosting loved ones at Christmas time. It could be your shortcut to a side hustle. How about an Airbnb at the end of your garden? Or maybe space to start your own business?

We’ve hunted high and low to find 10 very different properties with annexes for sale right now on Zoopla. Let's take a look.

Located in one of Horsell’s most coveted cul-de-sacs, this five-bedroom detached property ticks every box for extended families. It’s got kerb appeal, an integrated garage with driveway and is within walking distance of Woking town centre.

The main house is mid-century in style, with large picture windows flooding the rooms with natural light and 3 bedrooms.

Although attached to the main property, the annexe has its own entrance for extra privacy and comes with its own separate kitchen diner, sitting room, bathroom and bedroom. It’s also two-storey, so it feels like a proper house and not just a bolt-on.

Scotland’s Isle of Gigha is where you head if you want to get away from it all. As the most southerly Hebridean Island, it’s less than three hours’ drive from Glasgow, plus a 20 minute ferry crossing. Despite this, it feels beautifully remote.

Tighnavinish is one of the most stunning homes on the island, taking the form of two wings with extensive grounds. The central wing offers spacious, light-filled family living. The centrepiece is an open plan kitchen/dining/sitting room, with wood burning stove and floor-to-ceiling glazing. Three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a study complete this side of the property.

The adjoining annexe wing has two bedrooms, a kitchen, a sitting room and a bathroom. Its own entrance has all the hallmarks of a holiday let, with no shortage of visitors travelling to enjoy the island’s natural beauty.

The accommodation sprawls across 4,287 square feet and every room is packed full of original features. Of note is the amazing principal bedroom suite, complete with a fully-fitted dressing room and en suite with freestanding bath.

A one bedroom, self-contained annexe measuring 290 square feet nestles to the rear of the pristine gardens. There’s a second one-bedroom annexe located above a substantial outbuilding. The ground floor is set up for use as a salon/studio but with 1,123 square feet in total, this building could become a generous second home with rental prospects.

5. Four-bedroom house for sale in Crymych, Pembrokeshire: offers in the region of £375,000

Take the full tour

Surrounded by a patchwork of green fields with the Preseli Mountains close by, this may be one of Pembrokeshire’s most idyllic spots. Add easy access to the stunning Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and you have a true haven for families.

The main house is big enough for a growing family, with four bedrooms and two bathrooms. There's scope to refresh the decor but keep the cottage feel by retaining the Belfast sink, range-style oven and fireplace. And extra potential lies just next door.

The annexe takes the form of a detached former shop. It currently has accommodation on the first floor but there’s existing planning consent allowing the building to be converted for full residential use. The location lends itself to a holiday let but with refurbishment, the annexe would make a wonderful home for extended family.

A handy car port runs the entire length of the property, leading to an annexe with its own access, open-plan kitchen/living room, bedroom and bathroom. The space is ideal for temperamental teens who crave independence and boomerang children who have flown back to the family nest.

This three-bedroom property comes with a salty sea breeze and the sound of seagulls overhead, thanks to the wide sands of Norbreck Beach being a short stroll away. If you’ve got family attractions in mind, Thornton-Cleveleys is a quick tram ride from Blackpool’s illuminations and ballroom.

The location makes this home a good bet for those wanting to run a bijou Airbnb. Behind this house’s smart but unremarkable façade is a family home with a versatile studio-style annexe.
