The town itself is the terminus for the London to Penzance rail line and also the gateway to the Isles of Scilly. Architecturally the town is an interesting mix of Regency squares and terraces with strong links to the past, Victorian granite buildings and old terraced houses. The harbourside villages of Mousehole and Newlyn are full of cobbled streets and fishermen's cottages with larger properties, some with land, on the outskirts and in the rural areas.
