Location

Colleton Crescent is perhaps the finest group of Georgian town houses in Exeter. The crescent, which is Grade II* Listed, is mentioned in Pevsner’s ‘The Buildings of England’ and was built in 1802 by Matthew Nosworthy who was also responsible for Barnfield Crescent and Southernhay. At the start of the nineteenth century, business in the city was on the increase and Exeter was a thriving and bustling trading centre. The crescent of four storey town houses stands in a commanding position above the quayside overlooking the River Exe, the canal and the countryside beyond. Testament to the prosperity of the merchants who were profiting from the canal redevelopment which allowed larger and larger ships to navigate from Topsham to Exeter Quay, the crescent is the epitome of what was considered to be the finest and most elegant in architecture at that time. Indeed, such is its prominence that the famous English landscape artist J M W Turner chose to feature Colleton Crescent rather than the Cathedral as the focal point for his work ‘A view of Exeter’ painted in 1827.
Minutes from the city centre, Colleton Crescent is however hidden away from the busy streets, traffic and shoppers. Thus it enjoys relative peace and quiet, a fine outlook over the charming park opposite and some of the best city views up and down the river and canal.
