The stairs leading up are laid with oak parquet that continues throughout the flat. There is storage in the cupboard at the foot of the stairs that houses the gas fired central heating combi boiler and there is more storage in four hidden draws under the top two steps.

The flat can be divided in two by a sliding door between the kitchen and hallway. The kitchen is well organised. At one end there is ample storage including a cupboard for a Brompton folding bicycle and airing cabinet which is internally made of Cedar of Lebanon. At the other end are recently installed units with Corian surface and two sinks, integrated Bosch dishwasher and washing machine, a four-ring gas hob with electric oven and fridge-freezer. The kitchen overlooks a row of London Plain trees and an old paper mill building.

There are two rooms on the south side overlooking the communal courtyard with a view of the Barbican towers. These could be used either as two bedrooms or as a bedroom and reception room. One of these has an extensive built in cupboard with hanging space.

The modern shower room is tiled white with a slate floor, walk-in shower and underfloor heating with an integral Corian sink and storage.

The flat is superbly situated for shopping: Above Waitrose supermarket making deliveries from John Lewis perfect. It is next to Whitecross Street Market, close to Ironmonger Row baths and near the Barbican Arts Centre, offering film, music and theatre. Postmans Park is also just a short walk away.

Being in Zone 1 it has numerous transport links; Old St, Moorgate and Barbican tube stations and buses many of which run 24 hours a day.

We bought this flat in 2013 because we love the central location near the Barbican and Whitecross Street market. We were struck by the sense of inner-London community and the different parks nearby. Being above Waitrose – which is super convenient – puts the flat the equivalent of five stories up. Because of its height and lack of through traffic the flat feels peaceful. We also love the way the sun pours in on the south side across the open space of the courtyard, making it a lovely flat to work in.
