Description
The principal elevation faces due south, commanding distant views over the rolling downland. The house is set well back from the road, sheltered by an impressive beech hedge and a line of lime trees and is approached via an access lane giving on to wrought iron gates and a carriage driveway. The beech hedge and old brick and Sarsen wall enclose a large garden to the front of the property. Immediately to the rear of the house is a stone paved terrace with raised dining area beside an ornamental pond.
To the west of the main entrance a five-bar gate leads to the Coach House, attractively converted about 15 years ago to provide useful ancillary accommodation for family or staff use but which is also ideally suited for holiday or permanent letting to provide a useful income. Adjoining the Coach House is a garden store. The gravelled courtyard garden in front of the Coach House can also provide additional parking for the main house.
Outside
An extensive lawn stretches some 200 metres away towards the downs bordered by fine beech trees and beech hedging. The garden flows from one distinct area to another with shrub and perennial borders, box parterres, rose garden and large formal pond set within box and lavender. A timber summer house and large garden store are approached through the rose garden or the pond garden.
Situation
West Kennett House is an elegant four storey, five bay Georgian house of classical proportions built in 1780 in the small hamlet of West Kennett some 4 miles to the west of Marlborough. Mentioned in Pevsner as of particular interest, both the house and the wrought-iron gates and railings are Grade II Listed. The house and grounds lie within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a conservation area and the World Heritage Site of Avebury. All the land lies within the scheduled national monument of West Kennett Avenue, the avenue of Sarsen standing stones leading from the stone circle of Avebury to the smaller henge known as the Sanctuary on the Ridgeway Path. The line of the Roman road from London to Bath passes through the garden to the south of the main frontage below the present carriage driveway. Silbury Hill and West Kennett Long Barrow lie a mile to the west. The Ridgeway, the oldest trackway in Britain, starts half a mile to the east.
