This property has some incredible history attached to it that extends back some 500 years. The character of this timber framed Grade 2 listed building can be felt as soon as you step over the threshold and it has retained several interesting medieval features. Carpenters marks are inscribed on some of the beams and two of the windows still have the grooves in situ for sliding shutters when most windows in that period were unglazed. Other hallmarks include areas of moulding on the dais beam in the lounge and there are two crown posts in the roof space. The chimney stack was a later 16c addition; the large Bessemer beam above the inglenook bears a rebate and a hole for a bolt to secure a pot-hanger.

When the dry ragstone wall to the side of the property was being improved the owner discovered a 10 million year old sharks tooth in the fill of the wall, originating from the biggest shark that ever lived, the Carcharocles Megalodon attracting much media interest and displayed in Maidstone Museum for around a year.
The owner quote

Half Yoke is my family home, a unique and pretty property, steeped in history and character and a cosy and inviting place to live. It has a welcoming, friendly ambience that I have enjoyed for 57 years and transformed it into the beautiful house you see today. The fireplace has always been a great feature, particularly in the winter with a roaring fire where you can totally unwind after a busy day. In the summer the attractive gardens offer a place to relax and indulge in the atmosphere, soak up the sun and enjoy some al fresco dining.

Half Yokes origin is that of a Medieval Wealden Hall House, most of which is retained within this part of the property and can be seen today.

Following my eventual purchase of the house from the landlord the property underwent major renovation improvements which included new roof, windows, rewiring and installation of central heating to name but a few; a long overdue refurbishment that sympathetically enhanced and transformed without spoiling origins and character.

The property is situated in a quiet and peaceful, rural setting, accessed along a private tarmacked no through road with only four other dwellings. I have always felt very safe here and very fortunate to live in such an idyllic setting.

There are lovely countryside and river walks nearby, and a short stroll to the railway station with access to London and a four minute journey to Maidstone town.

If you are looking for a home that is rather special, here is an opportunity to purchase a unique and beautiful piece of history.
