A unique and impressive Grade II listed Victorian house situated in Upper Walmer.
Gothic House is a unique and impressive Grade II listed house situated in Upper Walmer. Dating from the Victorian era and understood to have been built in the Victorian-Gothic Purginesque style for an Admiral who was a member of the Keppel family.
The house has enjoyed a rich and well connected past. Each owner has been a respectful custodian of the property and the current owner is no exception, carefully restoring it to its former glory.
The house retains a wealth of character, of particular note is the covered verandah with Gothic Arches, and three sets of doors onto the covered terrace. It has deep skirting boards, moulded cornices and original features.
Gothic arched windows also predominate, together with high ceilings and three Victorian roof lanterns and original roof pitches, servants bell box (still working) with solid wood flooring.
Set back from the road and screened by a flint wall on three sides, the house is surprisingly light throughout with many rooms being double aspect and although the accommodation is generously proportioned, it has a very comfortable and welcoming feel.
Entering the house from the porch, double doors take you through to the impressive reception hall with generous ceiling height and excellent light which sets the tone for the house. Off the reception hall, through double doors to the front, can be found the drawing room. This enjoys a double aspect (south and east) with three sets of doors leading out to the covered verandah at the front. An open marble fireplace to one end, deep skirting boards, original sliding vertical shutters to one window and solid wood flooring make this an elegant and welcoming room.
To the rear of the house is the dining room, again double aspect (north and east) fitted with a cast iron wood burning stove and complemented by built in glass fronted storage cabinets and a dado rail. The kitchen/breakfast room on the opposite side of the hall is a cosy and most attractively presented space comprehensively fitted including a large built in dresser unit and enjoying French doors onto a secluded courtyard ideal for private dining. A cloakroom and utility complete the accommodation on this floor.
From the reception hall the grand staircase leads
to a light filled first floor landing curtesy of a roof
lantern. The principal bedroom suite occupies one
wing of the house offering a large bedroom off which a dressing area leads through to a spacious en suite.
A further bedroom suite with en suite shower along with two other doubles and a family bathroom complete the accommodation to the first floor.
The property also benefits from a useful spacious cellar room accessed from the reception hall and houses the boiler.
