About this property
A serene one-bedroom apartment tucked away within the illustrious Chelsea Studios enclave just off the Fulham Road. Designed by architect and sculptor Mario Maneti in 1925 the studios were primarily intended to be used as ateliers by his circle of artist friends. Originally known as the 'Italian Village' as Maneti took inspiration for the project from his family's opulent estate near Florence.
The apartment occupies the ground floor of the building Maneti designed as his own private residence. Elevated by a level of detail and proportion that subtly distinguishes it from its neighbours. A fine Italianate rhythm is present within the intricate tilework, stonework and cabinetry throughout the building.
The studios are set within the vast and verdant communal gardens that give this oasis it's temperate Mediterranean feel. A series of stone paths connect the dwellings, winding through fragrant planting and soft lawns bordered by established fruit trees. The entirely communal nature of the gardens has fostered a unique creative community within the heart of West London. In the summer months residents gather for picnics or private parties on the lawns or take a quiet moment next to one of the ponds. Most homes within this historic settlement are sold privately within the long-standing artists' community or passed from one generation to the next.
The smart white stucco fronted house is characterised by celadon green windows. Entry is to an impressive hallway, the original wave motif tiling chosen by the architect remains underfoot. Beyond, the open-plan living and dining area unfolds, the former orientated towards the original crittall windows that fill the eastern flank of the room. Finely crafted cabinetry and a large stone fireplace line the opposing walls, while elegant oak floorboards ground the lofty space.
Through a pair of glazed double doors lies the bedroom, where a high-set window above the bed allows the light to stream in. The adjoining bathroom is finished in a timeless palette, with both a bath and separate shower framed by soft, neutral tones. At the far end of the apartment, a curved brick step leads to a sunlit vestibule. The intricate mosaic and marble flooring designed by Maneti in the 1920's is the focal point of the room, illuminated by the glazed roof above. A stone step leads down to the kitchen, simple cabinetry picked-out in a fern green and granite worktops in a clever horseshoe configuration creates a pretty and practical place to cook.
The apartment is well served by two large store-rooms discreetly concealed behind original timber doors off the main living space and vestibule. There is also a large sunken store hidden beneath the floorboards in the living room. The current composition as a palatial one-bedroom spanning 1,044 sq ft creates an impressive atmosphere. However, the space could be reconfigured to accommodate a second bedroom and further bathrooms.
Chelsea Studios sits quietly behind tall stucco walls on the Fulham Road. Many of the area's most loved establishments are just a short walk away. The Harwood Arms remains London's only Michelin-starred pub, while The Fox and Pheasant, with its tiled bar and wisteria-covered frontage, is a firm neighbourhood favourite. North End Road Market runs through the week with fresh produce and street food, and nearby Lillie Road is known for its antiques shops. A half-hour stroll along the Thames brings you to the Chelsea Physic Garden, one of the city's oldest botanical gardens. Local food shops are close by day-to-day needs, and Fulham Broadway and Imperial Wharf stations are both close by, offering quick links across London.
