Located in the heart of Narberth, Pembrokeshire, voted the no1 place to live in Wales in recent years by the Sunday Times. Luxury Welsh Homes are honoured to introduce you to Llwynon, 61 St James Street, Narberth.
Believed to have been built in the 1600’s and converted to a Coaching Inn opening circa 1790, it is a truly stunning example of a majestic three-storey, three windowed Georgian Town House, that was built to impress with an equally well-proportioned lower-ground floor, creating high-quality living space over four-storeys as seen from the rear. The later conversion of the annex (seemingly a former chapel) between 1805 and 1819 is appropriately integrated with the main house. Oozing with historic ‘finds’ and conundrums, most unusually for the period, the property was bequeathed to the female lineage in 1722, even in marriage. This Grade II listed home is central to Narberth and all it has to offer. Set back from the main street behind original cast iron railings, it still retains its gravitas and conveys the importance of its former life and position in the community.
From an architectural and layout perspective, the Conservation Officer overseeing works commented that Llwynon is a property that is the least disturbed and most true to its original form in Pembrokeshire. The current custodians worked with a dedicated team of builders and specialists to have meticulously and lovingly restored and rejuvenated every part of this historic dwelling to make it into a wonderful home with modern comforts. With a plethora of original details and unexpected quirks that really capture the imagination, they have agonised over both the largest changes and the most minuscule of details.
Reception Hallway
The impressive original entrance door with original elliptical ‘fanlight’ over, grand proportions and high ceilings, as to be expected in wonderful Georgian homes of this calibre, with original, restored ‘Lincrusta’ wallpaper beneath the dado railing, column radiator, high skirting, majestic ‘barrelled’ archway, impressive ceiling chandelier and ornate rose, intricate cornicing and an elegant ( possibly ‘Nash’) staircase with original and cherished ‘Art Nouveau’ wallpapering beneath the dado, sweeping in an apsidal curve, up to the impressive landing and first floor.
Drawing Room
A truly magnificent yet comfortable room with dual aspect sash windows with shutters, beautiful Italian marble fireplace focal and talking point. With light cascading in from the beautiful 19th century curved bay window, with original glass, overlooking the breath-taking gardens and countryside beyond. High ceilings provide grandeur and a sense of tranquillity in this room with cornice, ceiling rose, column radiator, high skirtings, Victorian alcove with display shelving and two original doors providing access from and to the reception hall.
Breakfast and Dining Kitchen
Wonderfully well-planned and thoroughly thought out, this hand-crafted kitchen was created by local craftsperson ‘Norman Lincoln’ . Made from oak with ‘pippy oak’ panels the kitchen is practical and stylish with smeg ‘Linear’ range appliances including a double oven, hob with rising extractor, integrated dishwasher, and space for large fridge and freezer. A range of the highest standard hand-crafted cabinetry provides ample storage, with an opulent yet withstanding stone composite work surface over, one and a half steel sink with mixer-tap over and Zip hot water tap. Dual aspect windows allow natural light to flow through. The stunning, working, carved cast iron fireplace is thought to originate from 1910-1920’s with tiling and hearth. This room benefits from new Elm flooring throughout, column radiators, original ceiling rose and a window to the fore with shutters.
