Stanhope Gig is located in The Old Coach House, which was the coach house to the original Manor House. The Manor House was the residence of Lord Sidmouth who was Prime Minister between the years of 1801 and 1805.
Built by Lord Sidmouth in the 19th Century as the stables and coach house to serve Upottery Manor next door (now demolished), it is constructed of local stone and flint, with Membury stone ashlar dressings under a slate roof and the windows are set into some of the original arches. The building was sympathetically converted in the late 1980's within this beautiful Grade II Listed Old Coach House formed around a paved courtyard.
Upottery is a picturesque and sought after village in East Devon which lies just to the south of the border with Somerset and provides amenities all within walking distance. There is a strong sense of community within the village, which includes a monthly Community Coffee Morning, a Community Lunch and also Tea, and the Manor Rooms are the Hub for various events and classes. Upottery has a Community Orchard, a Playing Field, Village cricket and football pitches and weekly services in St Mary's Church.
The nearby town of Honiton provides further amenities including a range of shops, restaurants, public houses, sports centre, hospital, medical centre and schools.
