About this property
Description
Maam House is situated on a level plain with high sided mountains and glens of Glen Shira, dramatic countryside and scenery typical of the rugged Scottish mid-west highlands. Maam House dates from the early 19th century and it is protected by a category ‘B’ listing with Historic Scotland. The house is detached and is set amid mature, sheltered and strategically stocked gardens and grounds. The house is completed in white painted harled exterior, and its accommodation is laid out over 3 levels. Architecturally, it is a three bay classically proportioned country house, it has a slightly advanced bay to centre under a flat-decked piend and cat-slide roof with timber bracketed eaves and tall end chimney stacks, glazing is predominantly 12-pane in timber sash and case windows and rainwater goods are cast iron. The flat deck roof piend has been professionally replaced with code 8 lead in recent times.
Internally there are gracious apartments which in recent times have been beautifully restored to their former glory. A character period drawing room is at the first-floor level reached by a period staircase with curving hardwood rail and heritage thin metal spindles, a secondary staircase has ornate cast iron spindles and leads to the second-floor level. Throughout Maam House has seen the careful and sensitive preservation of many period features including brass finger plates and door lock ironmongery, centre ceiling roses, detailed cornice work and dado rails. There are painted timber fireplaces, now featuring Woodwarm multi fuel stoves, all set within convector boxes, efficiently radiating heat throughout the rooms. Most of the timber window shutters are retained and functional.
Maam House is close to the ‘B’ listed Inveraray Great Farm steading and is surrounded by open countryside and farmland. Nature abounds and there are frequent sightings of red squirrels, pine martens, red deer, roe deer, raptors including golden and sea eagles, as well as a myriad of songbirds attracted to the Maam House feeders.

Situation
Maam House enjoys a situation of great natural scenic beauty in Glen Shira, a glen in Argyll and Bute, on the west of Scotland, and at the northern end of Loch Fyne, just to the north of Inveraray. It is a special area of conservation within the UK, bordered by Beinn Bhuidhe on the Glen Fyne side.
Glen Shira is named after the River Shira, which runs through the centre of the glen. Further up the glen, the Shira runs into the 5 mw Sròn Mòr power station dam, then for about seven miles down to and through Loch Dubh and afterwards into Loch Shira, a small sea loch inlet on Loch Fyne.
The picturesque town of Inveraray is about 3.5 miles to the south of Maam House, it is arguably one of the prettiest coastal harbour towns on the west coast of Scotland. It’s beauty and charm have always drawn people to the area by both road and sea.
Inveraray has a fine range of local shops, including a new midi range Co-op supermarket, and services that comfortably cater for everyday needs and requirements. There are popular tourist shops and a number of friendly local hotels, country pubs and restaurants.
Helensburgh is about 40 miles to the southeast where there are furthermore extensive shops and professional services. Glasgow City is 62 miles to the southeast and as with all large cities, offers a full range of higher and further educational services as well as all the cultural and professional services normally connected with a major city.
Dunoon is approximately 38 miles away where there are Cal Mac and Western short car ferry crossings to Gourock. It is approximately 54 miles via Loch Lomondside to Glasgow Airport.
Primary schooling is available in Inveraray (3.5 miles) and secondary schooling is available at Lochgilphead (28 miles) Dunoon (38 miles) and Oban (39 miles). The nearest independent school is Helensburgh (40 miles) where it is possible for pupils to board.
The A83 and A82 provide access to central Scotland. Arrochar has a main line rail station with a service to and from Glasgow city centre and a sleeper service to London.
The area offers much in the way of outdoor pursuits including cycle routes, challenging hill climbs, walks and several golf courses. The recently established Cowal Way stretches from Portavadie in the West and travels eastward for 31 miles.
Sea, river, and loch fishing is also available in the area as are a number of commercially run game shoots. Some of the local estates allow stalking by prior arrangement.
For sailors, the sea lochs of the west of Scotland offer safe anchorages as well as spectacular coastal sailing; there are marina and chandlery services in the south at Portavadie, Dunoon, Rhu and Inverkip and to the northwest at Ardfern in Loch Craignish for easy western isles and coast access.
Travel Directions
From Glasgow proceed in a westerly direction on the M8 motorway for about 15 miles taking junction 30 onto the Erskine Bridge. Turn left off the bridge on the A82 and continue for about 25 miles to reach Tarbet. Continue to the left at Tarbet onto the A83. Proceed through Arrochar following signs for Inveraray. Continue beyond the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar for about 6.5 miles turning right, signposted ‘cemetery’. Continue past the Glen Shira cemetery and take the right-hand fork in the minor road, proceed across the River and continue on the single track road for 1.5 miles, turn left down the track, continue over the sleeper bridge, pass the relic of the Inveraray great farm steading on the left, to find the entrance to Maam House on the right hand side.
If travelling from Inveraray, proceed in a northerly direction of the A83 and continue for 1.5 miles then turn left at the head of the loch following signpost ‘Cemetery’ then follow directions as above.
