Evanton is a charming village in Easter Ross, in the Scottish Highlands. Nestled between the River Sgitheach and the Allt Graad, it sits about 24 km (15 miles) north of Inverness, around 10 km northeast of Dingwall, and approximately 7 km southwest of Alness.

Established in the early 19th century and named after Evan Fraser, the son of the village’s founder, Evanton developed further during the Victorian era. Today, it is a peaceful community with a blend of residential homes, local businesses, and green spaces. It serves as a commuter base for people working in nearby towns including Inverness, Dingwall, and Alness.

The village is also home to several features of local interest, including the scenic Evanton Community Wood, the striking Black Rock Gorge, the historical Kiltearn Church ruins by the firth, and proximity to the hilltop Fyrish Monument.

To Inverness

Evanton is highly accessible from Inverness via the A9, with a journey time of around 20–25 minutes by car. The road is direct and well-maintained. Public bus services also connect the village with Inverness, making it a convenient location for commuters or visitors.

To Dingwall

Dingwall, the nearest large town, is just a 10-minute drive from Evanton. Frequent bus routes make travel easy, and rail access is available via Dingwall station, which connects to the wider Highland and national rail network.

To the North

Heading north from Evanton is straightforward via the A9, providing easy access to Alness, Tain, and onward to Wick and Thurso. For those exploring the northern Highlands or the North Coast 500 route, Evanton is a convenient starting point

Kiltearn Church Circuit

A scenic 5.75 km (3.5 mile) circular walk that takes you through countryside and along the shoreline of the Cromarty Firth. Highlights include the ruins of Kiltearn Church, a quiet graveyard, views of seals on the shore, and peaceful farmland paths. This walk is mostly flat and suitable for most fitness levels.

Evanton Wood & Black Rock Gorge

This short but dramatic walk leads from the village into ancient woodland and out to the spectacular Black Rock Gorge—a narrow, deep chasm carved by the Allt Graad river. It’s a circular route of about 2 km with a few steeper sections, offering excellent views and a taste of Highland mythology.

Evanton Wood Loop

An easy and family-friendly 4 km loop through the community woodland. The trail winds through native trees and open clearings, with a variety of birdlife and seasonal wildflowers. It’s a great spot for gentle walking, dog walking, or nature exploration.

East Evanton Loop

A slightly longer 5.8 km walk taking you from the village along the River Glass, past farmland, and then along the shore of the Cromarty Firth. This loop includes a visit to Kiltearn Church and provides a pleasant combination of river, coast, and rural scenery.

Market Hill

A steeper, more strenuous climb, Market Hill rises above the village and rewards walkers with panoramic views of the firth and surrounding countryside. Historically used as a livestock trading spot, it's about a 1.6 km climb with a steady incline.

Further Afield

  • Fyrish Monument A popular hillwalk that starts a few minutes' drive from Evanton, offering breathtaking views over the Cromarty Firth from a dramatic stone monument built in the 18th century.

  • Ben Wyvis For experienced hikers, this Munro offers a full day’s challenge with spectacular Highland views.

  • John o’ Groats Trail Evanton sits along this long-distance coastal walking route that runs from Inverness up to John o’ Groats, offering excellent multi-day trekking opportunities.
