About this property

This bright two-bedroom apartment is positioned on the fourth floor of Drake Court, part of the renowned Dulwich Estate. Built between 1957 and 1963, the home has carefully preserved mid-century features, along with woodland views out over the tree canopy of the upper Dulwich Woods. Drake Court is positioned among the Dulwich Estate's quiet communal gardens and mature trees. There is free parking for residents along with a private garage en bloc.

    The Estate

An area well-known for its exceptional modernist architecture, the Dulwich Estate occupies approximately 1,500 acres and includes numerous private roads managed by the estate. It is noted for its concentration of outstanding 1950s and 60s design, much of it by Austin Vernon & Partners. The mix of houses and thoughtful landscaping makes for an appealing and unique place to live. For more information, please see the History section below.

    The Tour

The apartment is on the fourth floor, accessed by a newly refurbished lift or stairs. A vestibule area allows plenty of space for hanging coats and footwear, and leads to a central hallway down the main axis of the plan, laid with the original teak flooring.

Original glass partitions allow natural light to reach each corner of the apartment, and ensure the views from the living room are maximised. From here, through original Crittal windows, a panoramic view of the woodland takes centre stage; its south-facing orientation making it particularly light.

An original sliding glazed door opens onto the kitchen with fitted appliances, including an electric oven, gas hob, integrated fridge/freezer and dishwasher. Marmoleum flooring runs underfoot, and a ceramic sink sits beneath the Crittal corner window.

Both bedrooms are double; each has built-in wardrobe storage and has been recently redecorated. The principal room has been laid with new carpet. They have peaceful outlooks over the leafy estate.

An original, three-piece mid-century set of sanitaryware populates the bathroom; its pastel-yellow tone is a nod to playful mid-century style.

    Outdoor Space

Drake Court is peacefully situated among woodlands and communal gardens dotted with a variety of mature trees. This apartment has a private garage, and there is unallocated guest parking on the forecourt below.

    The Area

Despite its private setting, Drake Court is wonderfully connected to the surrounding area. Local attractions include the Dulwich Picture Gallery, the Horniman Museum and the local town centres of Crystal Palace and Dulwich Village.

Crystal Palace, which was included in Lonely Planet’s 'greatest little-known neighbourhoods in the world', is a short walk away and is a vibrant area with award-winning restaurants, bars and mid-century furniture shops. Haynes Lane market offers an array of fresh produce on the weekends. The Everyman cinema, which occupies a carefully restored art deco building, is also within easy reach.

The Dulwich Estate is close to Dulwich and Sydenham Woods, now a wildlife nature reserve; the lake, maze, and open spaces of Crystal Palace Park are also a short walk away.

There are excellent primary schools in the area, including the well-regarded Paxton Primary School.

Drake Court is well-positioned for access to the London transport network. Nearby Gipsy Hill station has direct rail links to London Bridge (26 minutes) and Clapham Junction (15 minutes). Crystal Palace station (Windrush overground and mainline trains) is also within walking distance, as is Sydenham Hill station, which runs direct services to Victoria. There are also excellent bus links to central London.
