Nearby, and close to historic New Bridge, is Spitchwick, which is an exceptionally beautiful spot known for it's wild swimming and picnicking, at the east end of the stunning Dart Gorge, renowned for it's great walks and views.

Four miles to the south east is the popular and attractive moorland town of Ashburton with it's excellent range of shopping and other facilities. There are independent shops including delicatessen, artisan bakery, fish deli, butcher's and greengrocer's, as well as pubs, restaurants, cafes and wine bar. The town also provides a health centre, pharmacy, dentist's and vet's surgeries and primary and secondary schools. In addition is a community arts centre and the renowned Ashburton Cookery School.

Dartmoor is one of the last great wildernesses in the UK, stretching across 368 square miles, and is renowned for it's spectacular scenery, with it's heather clad moorland, granite tors and wooded valleys bisected by rushing streams and rivers and there are many opportunities on the doorstep for walking, cycling, fishing, riding etc. Just to the south is the rolling countryside of the South Hams and the fabulous South Devon coast.

The A38 dual carriageway is easily accessible at Ashburton, leading east to the university and cathedral city of Exeter and west to Plymouth. At Exeter there is access onto the M5 motorway and an airport and from Plymouth there are ferries to France and Spain. At Newton Abbot is a station with mainline connections to London (Paddington) via Exeter.
