Summary
Loggerheads Yard runs between the Old Smugglers on Baxtergate and onto New Quay Road - named after the luggerhead taken from a captured French sailing ship that is still on the wall on Baxtergate the site of the former Ship Launch Inn. This cottage is Grade II Listed and dates back to circa 1811 and is one of the largest in the terrace being at the end where the entrance to Mackridge's Yard which also runs along to Baxtergate .
Local history says that there was historically a smugglers tunnel running underneath the yard to the harbour to move contraband. Originally part of the old residential town centre these cottages would have been bustling with life, very busy and much much closer to the harbour before New Quay road was constructed.
Number 6 has many original features such as exposed beams and sash windows and is very typical of a traditional Whitby fishermans' cottage tucked away from the elements in a communal yard.
On the ground floor there is a fully equipped kitchen and a lounge with a feature fireplace.
Stairs lead up to the first floor where there is a double bedroom with a cast iron fireplace and storage cupboard next to the chimney breast. There is also a modern tiled shower room.
On the top floor there is an additional double bedroom with sloping attic ceilings.
The cottage is in the middle of the town centre and close to all amenities including shops, restaurants, pubs, takeaways and the beach. It is also very close to both the train and bus stations.
Ideal as a second home, bolt hole or a holiday let this could be the ideal investment for someone who is interested in the traditional history of Whitby.
