About this property
This exceptional four-bedroom house can be found on Talma Road, a residential street lined with Victorian townhouses near Brixton Station. The house, which has a large private garden, has been extensively remodelled and extended; the volume-enhancing design places a strong emphasis on light and the footprint of the house now extends to just over 1,500 sq ft internally.
The Building
During the 1970s, the house was home – for a time – to activist Olive Morris, a prominent community leader in feminist, Black nationalist, and squatter’s rights campaigns. Talma Road was one of several Brixton residences she occupied during her activism, and her legacy is now formally recognised with an English Heritage Blue Plaque on the façade, a quiet but powerful marker of the building’s place in local and political history.
The Tour
The house presents a smart façade to the street, with its delicate decorative cornicing and pitched bay window. The entrance leads to a large living room at the front of the plan, which is adjoined by a family room and is illuminated by natural light from both aspects. Many of the original features have been cleverly reinstated, including original floorboards, ornate ceiling rose, cornicing and a Victorian fireplace.
The rear of the ground floor contains a spacious extension that encompasses a kitchen and dining area. This has been thoughtfully curated by the current owner, who has used a palette of sleek materials to create a considered, contemporary space, featuring Argento marble, stained oak cabinetry and gunmetal sanitary ware designed by Piet Boon.
The kitchen runs the length of one side of the room, culminating in a series of bespoke cabinets that form a useful pantry area. A wall of full-height bi-folding doors opens onto the garden, inviting an effortless transition between inside and out. Two large skylights allow further light in, while a glass door leads onto a separate terrace, greened with trailing ivy.
An original staircase leads to two spacious bedrooms on the first floor separated by a large family bathroom with white porcelain titles that chime beautifully with a Lusso stone sink, yellow marble and brass fittings.
The uppermost floor houses two further bedrooms, one of which features a generous en-suite. Finished in smooth micro cement in muted, dusty pink, the en-suite is complete with a walk-in shower and minimalist brass fixtures, creating a serene, tactile space. Positioned beneath pitched ceilings, these rooms are quietly removed from the rest of the home and would be ideal as bedrooms, guest accommodation, or flexible workspaces.
Outdoor Space
The house has a beautifully landscaped rear garden, designed by the award-winning Sprout Up, that provides an oasis of calm. Raised beds have been planted with a variety of greenery, creating a tranquil backdrop for a seating area that has been laid to gravel. The space is enclosed by black-painted timber fencing and feels incredibly private and peaceful.
The Area
Talma Road is perfectly positioned in the heart of Brixton, one of London’s most dynamic neighbourhoods, celebrated for its vibrant food, music, and cultural scene. Just moments away, Brixton Village, Market Row and Acre Lane offer an ever-changing mix of independent restaurants, bars, and boutiques.
Local favourites like The Ritzy Cinema, Electric Brixton, and the O2 Academy bring a real sense of community and creativity to the area, while The Department Store, a beautifully restored 1876 Bon Marché building, now houses collaborative workspaces, a vinyl shop, a community post office, and Canova Hall, one of Brixton’s most popular spots for brunch and cocktails.
The green spaces of Rush Common and Brockwell Park are just a short walk away. Brockwell is one of South London’s finest parks, home to a lido, tennis courts, café, and even a walled garden. It's also the venue for the Lambeth Country Show and a varied lineup of music festivals every summer.
Transport links are excellent; Brixton Underground (Victoria Line) gets you into central London in under 15 minutes, and numerous bus routes run directly from nearby Brixton Hill, offering quick connections into central London.
