About this property
This refined two-bedroom apartment is on the third floor of a mid-century building in Hyde Vale, within one of Greenwich's most sought-after quarters. A substantial renovation by the current owners introduced a selection of sympathetic materials and fittings, including handcrafted joinery designed by British artist Matthew Darbyshire and parquet floors. Outside, a well-maintained communal garden is shared by the building's residents. Greenwich station is a convenient 10-minute walk away and runs DLR and National Rail services.
The Tour
Integrated with the surrounding Georgian architecture, the building’s façade was recently restored and has curtain glazing at the front and rear. The ground-floor entrance leads to a communal concrete staircase with a hardwood balustrade and exposed blue brickwork.
The apartment lies on the third floor and is accessed by stairs. The front door reveals a large hallway with built-in cupboards and space to store coats and shoes. Expansive glazing at the front and rear makes the most of the natural light.
To the left is a substantial, open-plan reception room, where a wide south-facing window frames leafy views of tree-lined Hyde Vale. There is space to accommodate distinct zones for dining and lounging. The space is ideally suited for entertaining and is connected to the kitchen via a practical hatch.
The semi-open kitchen takes an asymmetrical, galley-style layout that has been entirely refitted with bespoke joinery. Mid-century inspired, the new units were designed and handcrafted by British artist and designer Matthew Darbyshire. There are canary-yellow countertops, marble inserts, and a white-tiled splashback. Appliances include an integrated gas hob and electric oven with 'hide-and-slide' door by Neff.
Two quiet bedrooms are across the hallway, both with newly installed glazing that overlook the communal garden at the rear. The spacious principal bedroom has fitted cupboards above the bed, designed to match those of the kitchen. The second bedroom currently serves as a versatile study.
The pristine bathroom has been refitted and clad with white pool tiles. It has a ceramic sink and a shower over the bath.
Outdoor Space
Residents have access to a large, mature and verdant communal garden that extends to the rear; there is a large dining table and a paved area for barbecues.
The Area
Hyde Vale is a short 10-minute walk from the centre of Greenwich and a few minutes from the open expanses of Greenwich Park and Blackheath.
Greenwich's pretty old town, famous for its maritime history, has an excellent selection of restaurants, pubs and shops, as well as a Picturehouse cinema and a theatre. The Old Royal Naval College, designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the 18th century, hosts a popular programme of events in the gardens, including concerts, an open-air theatre and a jazz festival.
There are some wonderful riverside pubs nearby, including the Cutty Sark and Trafalgar Tavern; the latter was a haunt of Charles Dickens', and is mentioned in his novel, 'Our Mutual Friend'. There are also artisan delis, a greengrocer, a butcher and a cheese shop on nearby Royal Hill.
Greenwich station is a 10-minute walk and runs services to Canary Wharf and Bank on the DLR and rail services to London Bridge and London Cannon Street (taking eight minutes and 12 minutes respectively). The Thames Clipper can be boarded from Greenwich Pier and runs services to Westminster in one direction and the O2 Arena in the other.
