Description
The Granary is a highly individual detached home designed by award-winning architect Sir Stanley Merer. Inspired by the traditional barn style, it reflects the character of Bisham Abbey and its historic Grange buildings. Located within the Bisham Abbey conservation area-a former monastic and manorial complex founded in 1135-it offers a rare blend of architectural distinction and heritage setting. The area is well protected from development and enjoys close proximity to the river and lovely countryside, as well as the A404 which leads to both the M4 and M40 motorways.
The main house is a more recent addition to the conservation area, built in the 1970s. Designed in a Mid-Century style, it features exposed brick walls, clean lines, tall windows that allows natural light in all year round, and sharp architectural angles. A neutral colour palette puts full focus on the character of the house, which offers a striking backdrop for personalisation. The architect-designed property has a quirky yet modern layout which is well suited to family life, providing two reception rooms and four good-size bedrooms.
Downstairs, the light-filled reception hall leads to a spacious dining room, a separate sitting room with two sets of French windows, and an open plan kitchen and breakfast room with adjoining boot room and separate utility room. The first-floor accommodation includes a principal bedroom with en suite shower room, three further spacious bedrooms all with built-in storage, and a family bathroom.
The separate self-contained annexe provides further accommodation well suited to guest use, for multigenerational living such as grandparents or older children living at home, or as an income generator. The annexe comprises a sitting room, kitchen and double bedroom with en suite shower room.
The Granary is set within 0.6 acres in a wonderfully secluded position, amongst the historic buildings of Bisham Grange close to the river Thames. The house is approached via a shared gravel driveway off Temple Lane which leads to a private gated parking area with space for several cars, access to a garage and an open car port. The gardens are open and enjoy excellent natural light, with mature planting around the boundary and the contours of the land creating a degree of privacy. Well-established trees and beautifully landscaped borders add colour and texture to the outside space, including box hedging, colourful flowers and herbaceous shrubs. The annexe benefits from its own private terrace and, to the rear of the main house, there is a wonderfully private seating area accessed by the sitting room.
