The land at Howmuir is located in the heart of East Lothian, one of Scotland’s most productive agricultural regions. The land lies between 30 and 55 metres above sea level, with a gently undulating topography and a predominantly southerly aspect. According to the James Hutton Institute, the land is classified predominantly as Class 3.1, with smaller areas of Class 2, supporting a wide range of arable cropping. The soils belong to the Rowanhill soil association, which is characterised by non-calcareous brown forest soils with a clay loam texture. These soils are easily worked, have a good working depth, and are relatively stone-free, holding moisture well and supporting consistent yields. The arable rotation has focused primarily on cereals, including winter wheat and spring barley, with potatoes, Brussels sprouts and cabbages integrated periodically.
