The land at Howmuir is located in the heart of East Lothian, one of Scotland’s most productive agricultural regions. According to the James Hutton Institute, the land is classified predominantly as predominantly Class 3.1, with a lesser area of Class 2, supporting a wide range of arable cropping. The soils belong to the Rowanhill soil association, which is characterised by non-calcareous brown forest soils with a clay loam texture. These soils are easily worked, have a good working depth, and are relatively stone-free, holding moisture well and supporting consistent yields.

The arable rotation has focused primarily on cereals, including winter wheat and spring barley, with potatoes and Brussels sprouts integrated periodically. Typical Crop Yields at Howmuir are as follows, Winter Wheat 3.26-3.50 tonnes/acre (8.00-8.64 tonnes/hectare) and Spring Barley 1.80-2.63 tonnes/acre (4.44-6.49 tonnes/hectare).
