Location

Projecting the quintessential example of village life, Ceres is one of the few Scottish villages to still have a village green which is adeptly named The Bow Butts. It was used as an archery practice ground in medieval times and still to this day hosts Scotland’s oldest Highland Games dating back to 1314 when Robert the Bruce decided to commemorate local men who fought in the Battle of Bannockburn. The village historically had a two-day meet with a market on the first day and ‘Plack and Penny’ day on the second, hosting the Ceres Derby – a marked-out racecourse in the green often resulting in riders and steed landing in the Ceres burn upon a misjudged tight turn. Several additional ‘games’ occurred and have since adapted over the centuries to what is famously known as the ‘Ceres Highland Games’. Recreationally Ceres is a fantastic location, it is on bus routes between Glenrothes, St Andrews and Cupar and has several walking, running and cycling routes nearby including the Fife Pilgrams Way leading from Muirhead into Ceres down Woodburn Road before heading towards St Andrews. Primary and nursery education is provided locally with secondary education nearby at Bell Baxter High School in Cupar or Madras College in St Andrews, also providing all additional amenities with cafes, restaurants, health and leisure facilities and a train station with excellent travel links making Ceres a perfect proposition for all ages.
