'The Studio’ at number 10 Halifax Road was built in 1890 by Mary Stewart Robinson, the daughter of the Master of St. Catherine’s college, Cambridge. It was built as an artist’s studio, with an overly large barn door, apparently because Mary liked to paint horses, and this enabled them to be walked in the building. In the early 1900s Mary’s father retired and returned to Yorkshire, and so Mary converted the back of the studio into accommodation and lived in the property for many years. The property has been further expanded multiple times, resulting in the property that exists today, which has been lovingly renovated by the current owners over the last decade.
Accommodation is arranged over three floors and has an attached annexe. The ground floor comprises a reception area and an inner lobby with access to the cloakroom and utility area, and stairs to the first floor. To the front aspect a delightful drawing room is arranged over two levels with a herringbone wooden floor and a bespoke bookcase with display cabinetry either side of a fireplace. Sash windows to two aspects give this room a bright and airy atmosphere.
The rear accommodation is allocated entirely to a spacious kitchen breakfast room with a fantastic range of bespoke kitchen cabinets and glass display units. A central island includes two wine fridges and there is an integrated double oven range with an induction hob and separate oven. Bifold doors give access to the rear garden.
The first floor has a principal bedroom with en suite shower and dressing room. There are two further bedrooms at this level both with en suite shower rooms, and bedroom four forms part of the loft conversion with an en suite. This also has access to the roof terrace. Adjacent is an annexe comprising a kitchen/living room, bedroom, bathroom and a separate annexe. It also produces a respectable income via Airbnb.
The front aspect has a garden with retaining brick wall and side pedestrian access. The garden to the rear has a terrace adjacent to the property, a lawn with adjacent brick path and a useful office/studio.
Cambridge offers an excellent range of independent and high street stores, bars, cafés and restaurants together with cultural amenities. Communications links are excellent: The village benefits from bus routes into the city, the M11 and A14 give access to major regional centres and the motorway network and Cambridge mainline station (3.7 miles) offers excellent rail links to central London (London Kings Cross 53 minutes, London Liverpool Street 1 hour 8 minutes) in less than an hour.
