Darwen is a market town and civil parish in the Blackburn with Darwen borough in Lancashire, England. The residents of the town are known as "Darreners". The A666 road passes through Darwen towards Blackburn to the north, Bolton to the south and Pendlebury where it joins the A6, about 18 miles (29 km) north-west of Manchester. The population of Darwen was 27,897 in 2021.

***transport***
Darwen sits in a large valley strung along the A666 road along the valley floor. It is connected to the motorway system at Junction 4 of the M65 at Earcroft, on the town's northern boundary, and considerable traffic passes through the town centre along the A666, causing high levels of air pollution. The local council has recently attempted to address the situation by adding a new road layout to the town centre, with public transport and junction improvements to reduce traffic.

Darwen stands along the Ribble Valley railway line, operated by Northern. Darwen railway station has up to two trains per hour between Blackburn and Rochdale (via Bolton and Manchester); one train per hour continues beyond Blackburn to Clitheroe.

Darwen's bus terminal (Darwen Circus) hosts buses up to every 12 minutes to Blackburn/Accrington on weekdays. There is also a service, every 20 minutes on weekdays and hourly on Sundays, to Bolton and Clitheroe, but the Bolton service terminates at 7:00pm. Both services are operated by Blackburn Bus Company.

***education***
Education in Darwen includes a variety of schools, a curriculum that covers the national standards with some schools offering specialized technical subjects, and a strong emphasis on student well-being and development. Darwen's secondary schools have above-average progress 8 attainment, and a majority of schools in the borough have been rated good or outstanding by Ofsted. The borough's education system is a part of the broader Blackburn with Darwen borough council which has a total of 64 primary schools and 26 secondary schools.

***things to do***
Darwen's amenities include attractions like Jubilee Tower, Bold Venture Park, and the Darwen Heritage Centre. It also features a town centre with shops and eateries, a leisure centre, the Darwen Library Theatre, and a market. The area is characterized by its industrial heritage, green spaces, and strong community feel.
