Step inside
The living space is arranged over three floors, providing a wealth of accommodation that lends itself perfectly to both family life and multigenerational living. The impressive entrance hall, large enough to accommodate even the grandest Christmas tree, leads down to a generous kitchen/breakfast room with a central island and doors opening directly onto the gardens.
A separate utility room and cloakroom provide added convenience, while a tucked-away office offers an ideal space for home working. The formal dining room enjoys two sets of French doors that open onto a covered veranda, creating a seamless connection to the gardens.
Designed with entertaining in mind, the drawing room and sitting room are linked by elegant double doors, allowing the spaces to be used separately or opened up to create a wonderful open-plan setting for gatherings. Large windows frame views over the gardens, filling both rooms with natural light, while two open fireplaces offer a warm and atmospheric focal point. A double bedroom with an en-suite shower room offers flexible space, ideal for visiting guests, older children or multigenerational living.
On the second floor, the principal bedroom enjoys wonderful natural light and a spacious feel, with views across the gardens and park. A connecting door leads to bedroom four, providing the option of an en-suite dressing room, nursery. Three further double bedrooms and a family bathroom complete this floor, offering excellent space for family members or guests.
Step outside
The enclosed gardens are a particularly lovely feature, with a central lawn framed by established trees and planting. A variety of seating areas allow you to follow the sunshine throughout the day, while the covered veranda provides the perfect spot for shade or shelter.
A private pedestrian gate leads directly into Vivary Park, offering an exceptional extension to the outdoor space. To the front, a driveway provides vehicular access with ample room for parking several cars. The driveway is held under a licence from Taunton Deane, allowing vehicular access to the property; this arrangement has been in place for 25 years, with the current cost being £350 per annum.
Sellers insight
St Bernard’s has been our family home for nearly 40 years. When we first moved in, my teenage siblings and I loved being right in the centre of Taunton for its busy bars, pubs and restaurants. But that proximity was equally handy for my parents who were able to pop to M&S, the Brewhouse theatre or the county cricket ground and not have to take the car out. Luckily, St Bernard’s was large enough to easily accommodate the next generation too, as all their grandchildren adore Vivary Park for its playparks, bandstand, duck pond and ice cream vans!
This beautiful house lends itself to entertaining; from an annual Twelfth Night party to show off the huge Christmas tree in the hall, to garden parties to coincide with the Vivary Park Flower Show, St Bernard’s was always full of guests, laughter and fun.
We consider ourselves very lucky to have grown up in a house with bags of charm, history and character. We hope the new owners will be equally happy here.
