About this property

This Type P2A H apartment is located on the top floors of John Trundle Court, part of the iconic Barbican estate. Carefully renovated by Thomson Brothers, its original details sit alongside bespoke joinery. Particularly notable is the bedroom, an especially capacious area with a towering curved ceiling and breathtaking views.

    The Estate

Chamberlin, Powell and Bon designed the Barbican Estate after their success with the neighbouring Golden Lane Estate. Built to replace the buildings destroyed by a night of bombing in December 1940, the Barbican is now lauded as a masterpiece of brutalist architecture.

Completed in October 1972, John Trundle Court forms part of Phase IV of the City’s building programme for the Barbican site.

    The Tour

Set at the western edge of the Barbican estate, John Trundle Court is a terrace block that runs north to south along Aldersgate Street and forms a u-configuration with Bunyan and Bryer Courts.

The building is approached from both Fann Street and Beech Gardens and accessed via stairs leading to raised communal promenades. The apartment’s private door is on the sixth floor and can be reached via lift or stairs. Original mailboxes sit on one side.

Entry is to the living space, a beautiful room framed by broad teak glazing at the far end. A door here slides to open the room to the estate beyond. Flexible in nature, there is space for dining and sitting areas, and wide, simply finished walls are a blank canvas for art.

Behind is the kitchen, a neat area open to the room and with a cut-out that faces the staircase. Appliances include a fridge-freezer, oven, dishwasher and wine fridge.

Twisting up to the upper level is a handsome staircase with a metal core. The bedroom lies above and is beautifully bright thanks to large windows. There is plenty of storage space in built-in wardrobes. Next door is the bathroom, finished in a typically Barbican manner with small-scale white square tiles.

    Outdoor Space

One of the original intents of the Barbican plan was to provide an enclosed green sanctuary for those living on the estate. As a result, residents have access to several both private and public gardens. The private gardens extend to around two and a half acres and comprise expansive lawns, various species of mature trees, and textual borders with native and exotic species. There are also dedicated areas for children's play.

Residents can apply for permanent parking licenses via the Barbican Estate Office.

    The Area

The Barbican Arts Centre is on this home's doorstep and has a theatre, an art gallery, a concert venue, cinemas, and several bars and cafés. There is a Nuffield fitness and wellness centre accessible from John Trundle Court’s ground floor.

The apartment is near an excellent selection of pubs and restaurants, including the nearby Smithfield Market, St. John, Luca, The Quality Chop House, and Exmouth Market. Whitecross Street also has a food market every weekday. St Paul’s, the River Thames, the South Bank and Tate Modern are all within walking distance.

Transport links are excellent, with Underground stations at nearby Barbican (Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan Lines), Old Street (Northern line), and Moorgate (Northern, Hammersmith & City, Circle and Metropolitan lines). Farringdon Station offers a host of Underground lines (Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan and Elizabeth Lines) as well as Thameslink services to Gatwick Airport.
