Dingwall is a small historic town in the Scottish Highlands, situated at the head of the Cromarty Firth, about 14 miles (23 km) north-west of Inverness. It is traditionally the county town of Ross-shire and serves as a local hub for surrounding rural communities.
The town’s name comes from Old Norse Þingvöllr, meaning “assembly field, ” reflecting its origins as a Viking meeting place. Dingwall has a long history as an administrative and trading centre, although much of its medieval castle has now disappeared, with the site marked near the town centre.
Today, Dingwall is a quiet market town with a mix of historic buildings and modern amenities. The River Peffery runs through it, and the surrounding landscape is typically Highland-rolling farmland, wooded areas, and views toward the hills. It has good transport links for its size, lying on the Far North railway line and close to major roads connecting Inverness to the north and west Highlands.
Dingwall is often used as a base for exploring nearby attractions such as Strathpeffer, the Black Isle, and the wider Ross-shire area, offering a blend of local history, community life, and access to Highland scenery.
