About this property

This rare three-bedroom home forms part of the idiosyncratic Murray Mews in Camden. Built by architect Ian Fraser in 1970, many of its original features remain, such as swathes of aluminium-framed glazing and an open-tread staircase. Over 1,500 sq ft of space extends over three storeys, including a spectacular double-height dining area. Outdoor spaces include a leafy courtyard garden and a private roof terrace. The shops, bars and restaurants of Camden are within easy walking distance, while Regent's Park is a short bicycle ride away.

    The Tour

Set back from a cobbled street, the front door opens onto a bright entrance hall with original timber floorboards. An open-tread staircase rises to the main living space on the first floor. Stretching across the full width and depth of the plan, the space is currently used as a study and sitting area. A panel of gridded glazing on the ceiling fills the space with light, while further illumination is provided by a magnificent full-height window extending down to the dining area below.

This double-height space is defined by timber-framed stable doors opening onto the courtyard beyond, the latter bordered by leafy green trees. Original built-in storage divides the kitchen and dining area. Matching timber kitchen cabinetry is complemented by blue and white tiling, and a large window looks out onto the garden.

A guest bedroom on this floor has its own entrance at the front of the house. Overhead, a strip of pitched glazing bathes the room in light, and an attached kitchenette has additional cabinets and an integrated oven. The ground-floor plan is completed by a bathroom.

Two further bedrooms sit on the second floor. One has original fitted shelving and verdant treetop views, while the other has floor-to-ceiling storage and looks toward the street. There is a shared bathroom with a bathtub. A staircase ascends to the third floor, where there is access to a private roof terrace.

    Outdoor Space

A lush courtyard garden sits at the rear of the house, bordered with a variety of tall trees to create a sense of privacy and remove. At the top of the house, a peaceful roof terrace is perfect for reclining in the sun.

    The Area

Murray Mews is a quiet cobbled street just off Camden Square. Particularly popular with architects, it is home to several other outstanding modern houses by well-known practices, including Tom Kay and Team 4 (Richard Rogers and Norman Foster’s original practice).

The house is wonderfully positioned for the best of Camden and King's Cross. Regent’s Park is a 28-minute walk – or a 13-minute cycle – away, and has a boating lake, as well as numerous cafés, sports facilities and ornamental gardens. Even closer to home are Camden Square and Caledonian Park.

Nearby Granary Square in King’s Cross provides a multitude of excellent shopping and dining opportunities, including Barrafina, Caravan, Dishoom, and audiophile bar Spiritland, while the Thomas Heatherwick-designed Coal Drops Yard is home to retailers Margaret Howell, Tom Dixon and Aesop. An Everyman Cinema caters for confirmed cinephiles, and there is a Waitrose nearby.

The area has some well-regarded schools, most notably Torriano Primary School and Camden School for Girls. Camden Road station is an 11-minute walk away, with Overground services to Highbury & Islington in around five minutes. Camden Town Underground station is only slightly further afield and is served by the Northern line, while the Piccadilly line can be accessed at Caledonian Road. The house is also well placed for access to the Eurostar terminal at St Pancras International.
