Detailed Description

This historical period property has just come to market and will be very sought after.
The property has documented historical links going back to the 1700's & 1800's as a Turnpike / Toll House and is currently named as "Toll-Gate House".
"Hay Cliff eventually became the Folkestone Road. By the mid 18th Century Capt. John Bazely was elected Mayor, in 1761 he succeeded in piloting through Parliament a Turnpike bill. This created the first Turnpike in Dover through to Folkestone and in 1763 the toll road joined with the Sandgate turnpike and thus the new toll road became known as the "Dover-Sandgate Turnpike". "The original Toll house was at the junction of the present Folkestone Road and Elms Road, now Elms Vale Road. The Turnpike continued until 1877, when the trust applied for renewal to Parliament, but it was contested by a large part of the local population, fed up having to pay a toll fee to get from Dover to Folkestone along a relatively straight and flat road, and the original toll house was demolished. The present "cottages" were built shortly after by Major Robert Lawes in c1870's, and the famous Dover horse trough once stood nearby. "
The House features a period flint stone building, being one side of the original Toll Villa with a detached garage, and wrap around gardens to the back, side and front.
There are 4 bedrooms, one downstairs which can be used as a further reception room if preferred, and 3 further bedrooms upstairs with a split level landing providing a family bathroom, with a walk in shower along with bath, sink and toilet, on the same level as a large single bedroom.
Two further large double bedrooms face each other on the top landing with feature fireplaces and high ceilings.
Most of the rooms throughout the house, except for the kitchen, have extra high ceilings with lots of natural light flooding in to this deceptively large family home.
There are 2 reception rooms, one with an ornate fireplace surround in the main lounge, above the log burner fireplace. There is another reception room leading from the kitchen, currently used as a second Lounge & Diner. There is also a functioning log burner in this room along with a full wall feature of a 3d wooden world map, providing an amazing talking piece at dinner parties as well as an educational piece for young and old.
There is a modern kitchen with a large style cooker with 5 gas hobs, and 4 x electric ovens. Currently there is a built-in dishwasher, a washing machine and American style large fridge freezer. There is also a black marble kitchen island with extra storage and a breakfast bar.
In the corridor between kitchen and lounge is an understairs W.C.
The detached garage is large, providing a unique space for either storage or parking a vehicle, with off road parking to the front of the garage for up to 3 cars.
There is also a fully fitted and functional E.V. (Electric Vehicle) charging point on the garage wall to the driveway, with its own electric board in the garage.
The garden at the rear is set in 2 areas, a patio for seating with a unique log burner, and near to the kitchen for outside dining. There is also a laid to lawn area with established shrubs and trees, including a delicious cherry tree, with an ornamental garden fishpond in the corner.
Behind the garage is a decking area that needs some attention, which could provide a fabulous location for a hot tub, along with a log store for the wood burners indoors.
The garden to the front of the property is laid with a decorative stone surround, there are also established beautiful Magnolia trees and seasonal Blue Bells.
Particularly from the front garden, but can also be seen front the back garden is a fantastic view of the historical Dover Castle, which is only a 15 minute drive away to explore one of the best historical castle in English history, including the war time tunnels. From the top of the Castle Keep you can look back along Folkestone road to the house, maybe in years gone by the gentry were keeping an eye on their toll fees.
At the front and rear of the property are bus stops within a few minutes walking distance leading towards Dover or Capel & Folkestone. The main line train station is only a 15-minute walk away with fast trains to central London taking approximately 1 hour, and with a 25-minute walk to the Dover" Curve" and Marina sea front leisure area.
The current vendor is looking to downsize, so is also open to discussing a part furnished sale.
