The building stops you before you've found the front door. A white-stuccoed corner pub, ornate and four storeys tall, rising above the junction of Catesby Street and Barlow Street with the confidence of something that has stood here for nearly 175 years.
The Victory was built in 1852 and named after hms Victory, Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar. It served as a Courage Best pub for over 150 years before it closed. In 1979, Courage filmed their most famous television advertisement here: Chas & Dave, a pub piano, The Victory's signage visible in the opening frames. The building features in Walworth Reflections by Darren Lock and Mark Baxter, with photographs from the 1930s. Converted into nine homes in 2018, it has lost none of its presence.
Ground floor, two bedrooms, the private courtyard. Three-quarters of the flat retains the original pub proportions: 14ft ceilings throughout the reception and principal bedroom. The floor plan does not prepare you for how the space feels.
Inside, almost everything is new: Contemporary kitchen, modern bathroom, bespoke built-in wardrobes, ducted air conditioning. Two original floor-to-ceiling support beams from the pub remain. The building does not let you forget what it was.
The courtyard is reached directly from the bedroom, completely private, planted and strung with warm lighting. It works as a proper outdoor room.
Salisbury Row Park sits directly across the street. Elephant Park, Borough and Bermondsey are all within easy reach.
