A beautifully refurbished cottage in the foothills of Highland Perthshire

Description
Believed to date from around 1850, Tigh an Fhurain is a traditional stone-built, one-and-a-half-storey cottage which has been comprehensively refurbished and extended in recent years. The result is a beautifully balanced home where a charming, understated exterior conceals a light-filled, contemporary interior that has been designed to maximise both space and character.

At the heart of the house is the kitchen/dining room, a welcoming and sociable space suited to modern living. There is room for a central island as well as a dining table, while cleverly utilised alcoves provide additional storage and informal seating. A glazed sliding door links the dining area to the hall, allowing natural light to flow throughout the ground floor.

The sitting room is warm and inviting, with a wood-burning stove and two pretty windows framing views of the distant hills. The ground floor extension provides a double bedroom with en suite shower room and dressing room, together with a cosy study, also fitted with a wood-burning stove and accessed directly from the kitchen.

The front door opens into a delightful sun room, with glazing on three sides and uninterrupted views across the surrounding countryside. To the rear of the house there is a utility room and WC.

On the first floor are two charming double bedrooms. One features an exposed stone wall with the old fireplace opening and an original window with a long west-facing outlook; this is one of the most characterful rooms in the house. A newly installed balcony-style roof window enhances light and views. The second bedroom benefits from built-in cupboards. The landing is spacious enough to provide a useful work area and gives access to a bright, contemporary bathroom.

Outside
Tigh an Fhurain sits in 0.6 acres of neat garden, enclosed partially by an old stone field dyke. There is gravel parking in front of the house, a copse of trees underplanted with spring bulbs and an expanse of mown lawn. In the far eastern corner of the grounds there is a little bog garden, possibly the site of an old spring and the the origin of the property’s Gaelic name which means ‘house of the spring’. A delightful enclosed timber summerhouse, complete with a log burning stove, has been created within the little woodland area.
