History of Balcombe Mill
A historic Grade II Listed former watermill situated on Mill Lane in the picturesque Sussex village of Balcombe.
Dating from the 19th century, the mill originally operated as a water-powered corn mill fed by Shill Brook, serving the local agricultural community for many years. The building is believed to have been an overshot mill, with water supplied from a mill pond to power its machinery.
During the 20th century, the mill ceased commercial operation and much of the original machinery was removed, with some equipment reportedly transferred to Ifield Mill before the valley downstream was adapted for reservoir works. The upper sections of the building were later sympathetically converted into residential accommodation, preserving the distinctive external appearance and historic character of the original mill structure.
Today, Balcombe Mill remains an important local landmark, recognised for its historic and architectural significance. The property was officially Grade II Listed by Historic England on 11 May 1983, noted for its traditional weather-boarded elevations, slate roof, and characteristic three-storey mill form.
