Imposing former shooting lodge, in a stunning location at the head of a beautiful Angus Glen.
Description
Glen Doll Lodge is an imposing Victorian former shooting lodge, believed to date from 1872, on the edge of Glendoll Forest at the foot of the rugged peak Craig Mellon. Lying to the south is Driesh (947m), one of the of the most easterly Munros. Glen Doll is deeply woven into Scottish history. In the late 1800s the owner of the then 10,000 acre estate attempted to restrict access, leading to a legendary court case with local shepherd Jock Winter and the Scottish Rights of Way Society, resulting in a victory for public access in 1888. Jock’s Road, a trail to upper Deeside, starts at Glen Doll. In the 1930s the estate was acquired by the Forestry Commission, who then sold the lodge to the Scottish Youth Hostel Association, who used the property up until 2001. It has since been in private ownership. Since 2007 it has been used firstly as a fabulous country house, and from 2016, when it was acquired by the current owner, as a successful holiday retreat - . Over that time considerable renovations and improvements have been made to both the lodge and a linked apartment, known as The Cottage, which can be part of the main house or used separately. Given its past usage, the lodge has potential for a variety of purposes, subject to any necessary consents. The lodge provides spacious accommodation with eight bedrooms, six of which are en suite, and impressive reception rooms. The Cottage has two further bedrooms. Recent sympathetic improvements include the creation of a sizeable dining room from three smaller rooms, upgrading en suites, together with some replumbing and rewiring in 2022/23. A new water tank has been installed, together with a fire alarm system. Traditional features remain, with cornices in the halls, reception rooms and bedrooms.
The house provides ideal guest accommodation or works well as a large family home, in a tranquil setting, secluded yet accessible, and surrounded by Forestry and Land Scotland woodland. The attractive harled house has a slate roof, adorned with ornately carved bargeboards, and arranged around a courtyard. It is approached by a drive through the trees, which cumulates in gravelled parking. A covered entrance porch with fitted benches, opens to an entrance hall with a wooden floor. Off this is a double aspect sitting room with dado rail and wood burning stove. The impressive hall has a wooden floor and staircase to the first floor, while a fine dining room has two fireplaces, shelves, Amtico floor and doors to a south facing porch. The imposing double aspect drawing room has a bay window, fireplace with wood burning stove and two wall lights, while a games room has a fireplace and two cupboards. Beyond is a tiled WC with washbasin; a back porch to the courtyard; and a laundry room with a sink, two washing machines, three dryers, small chest freezer and clothes pulley. Also off the entrance hall is an office with walk in cupboard, which leads to a fully fitted kitchen with wooden worktops with dishwasher, sink, oven/grill, Rayburn stove, and an island unit with a hob, under counter fridge, together with a wooden floor and shelved larder with an under counter freezer. Off a stone flagged inner hallway are back stairs, two walk in cupboards (one housing an under counter fridge and freezer, and wine fridge), a partially tiled WC with washbasin, and a door to the cottage.
The landing has two walk in cupboards. Bedrooms are named after features on the old estate. Opposite bedroom 1 is a partially tiled bathroom with bath, shower, washbasin and WC. Bedroom 2 is double aspect with an en suite with bath, shower, double washbasins and WC. Bedroom 3. Bedroom 4 links to a shower room with washbasin and WC (which links to the landing). Bedroom 5 is double aspect with a tiled en suite with bath, shower, washbasin and WC. Bedroom 6 has an en suite with shower, washbasin and WC. Opposite is a WC with washbasin, while bedroom 7 has an en suite with bath with shower, washbasin and WC. Bedroom 8 has an en suite with shower, washbasin and WC.
The cottage has a hallway with stairs and a cupboard housing a Worcester boiler. The living room has a woodburning stove, while the fitted kitchen has an under counter fridge and freezer, Stoves cooker with extractor and sink. A WC has a washbasin. Upstairs are two bedrooms and a tiled bathroom with bath with shower, washbasin and WC.
The garden is mainly lawn, with an enclosed area in front of the house. There is a brick built and harled former squash court (11.1m x 6.6m approx.) with a slate roof, now used for storage. A former stone built bothy with a slate roof comprises two stores (3.3m x 3.7m & 5.2m x 4.2m approx.). Attached to the house is a boiler room with two Worcester boilers and a Hyundai stand by generator.
Location
Glen Doll Lodge enjoys a truly enviable position at the head of Glen Doll, which itself is at the top of Glen Clova, on the south eastern edge of the Grampian Mountains and within the Cairngorms National Park. Glen Clova is one of the most beautiful of the Angus Glens. The lodge sits amidst stunning highland scenery above the confluence of the White Water Burn with the early reaches of the River South Esk, the latter running southwards to meet the sea at Montrose. The surrounding woods, known as Glendoll Forest, provide shelter and give the property a highland setting with established forestry, and the moors and mountains of the Cairngorms National Park rising all around.
The route up Glen Clova is dramatic and flanked by steep, craggy mountains, with scooped hanging corries ringed by cliffs. The farmland on the lower slopes gives way to the extensive Glendoll Forest at the head of the glen. The area is renowned for its rich diversity of flora and fauna, with an abundance of wildlife including wildcats, deer, pine martens, red squirrels, sea and golden eagles.
The lodge is ideally situated for those who wish to enjoy the range of outdoor pursuits which the surrounding glens are famed for in this part of Angus. The spectacular scenery offers ample opportunity for walking and mountaineering. Jock’s Road, a renowned track through the hills to Braemar, begins at the foot of Glen Doll and winds westwards along the White Water before tracking north. There are further routes north to Loch Muick and locally through Glendoll Forest.
Low and high ground shooting can be taken on local estates, whilst fishing may be taken on the River South Esk. There is fishing on Loch Heath by arrangement with the Glen Clova Hotel. Golf courses in the area include Kirriemuir, Alyth and Forfar. Other outdoor pursuits include loch fishing at Lintrathen, skiing at Glenshee in the winter months, and riding which is available locally.
Angus benefits from good connections to Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen and Edinburgh, with the A90 dual carriageway easily reached from Kirriemuir. Dundee has a mainline railway station with regular services to the north and south, including a sleeper service to London. Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports have a wide range of flights.
There is a primary school at Cortachy with secondary schooling at Webster’s High School in Kirriemuir. Local shopping can be found in Kirriemuir and Forfar and there is a renowned hotel at Glen Clova and the Drovers Inn is a well known restaurant at Memus.
