The Location
Hurley is one of the most picturesque and historic villages on the River Thames. It was listed in the Domesday book of 1086 and in that same year a Benedictine monastery was established as a cell to Westminster Abbey. The Olde Bell Inn was built in 1135 as the monastery’s guest house and is reputed to be Britain’s oldest working inn. In more modern times it became the meeting point for Churchill and Eisenhower during the 2nd World War, as it was close to the Manor House which served as Station Victor, a secret headquarters of the American oss, which trained and handled communications with spies in Europe. Post war the oss became the cia as it is known today.
The village itself is renowned for its beautiful riverside setting featuring the Hurley Lock, Lock Island and the Thames riverside path. Period architecture abounds throughout the village and, as a result, Hurley has been the location for numerous episodes of ‘Midsommer Murders’, the ‘Marlow Murder Club’ and even a James Bond movie.
The village of Hurley enjoys a strong, friendly and welcoming community, hosting their own village fete and regatta each summer, a Gala dinner in the autumn and a panto at Christmas. In addition, there are multiple village activities and associations such as tennis and golf associations, a cricket club, a history society and many more to be enjoyed throughout the year. Amenities in the village include a local village pub as well as the Olde Bell Inn, a village shop and café.
Hurley is also a paradise for walkers with idyllic walks within the village, along the riverfront and in the surrounding countryside. The property is centrally placed to enjoy all aspects of Hurley village life.
The sought-after towns of Marlow and Henley-on-Thames are both within easy reach, offering an excellent choice of independent shops, restaurants and amenities. For commuters, Maidenhead station provides fast and frequent services into London.
A rare opportunity to acquire a wonderful family home with a beautiful garden in one of the area's most desirable Thames-side villages.
