About this property
Colourful, characterful and bigger than you might expect, this is a brilliant Henley house in one of the town’s prettiest streets. With the river at the end of the road, over 1,100 sq ft arranged over three floors, a fabulous glazed garden room and a beautifully landscaped walled garden, it offers a special combination of period Henley charm and contemporary town-centre living. Friday Street has always been one of our favourite Henley addresses. Pretty, historic and remarkably peaceful considering its position right in the centre of town, it runs down towards the Thames with the river visible at the end of the road. The station, shops, cafés, restaurants and everything else that makes Henley such an enjoyable place to live are all within an easy stroll.
The current owners have embraced colour, given the interiors a strong sense of personality and completely reworked the garden, while retaining the appealing mixture of old and new that makes the house so enjoyable.
And it is surprisingly big. Behind its period frontage is over 1,100 sq ft of accommodation extending a considerable distance to the rear and arranged over three floors.
The front door opens into a wonderfully generous 25'9 sitting/family room. It is a warm, sociable space with timber flooring, period proportions and a bold colour palette that feels entirely at home in the building. There is ample room to create distinct sitting and family areas, while a long run of built-in cupboards provides the sort of storage that is invaluable in a town-centre cottage.
Beyond is the kitchen, with a useful cloakroom alongside, but it is what happens at the very back of the house that really transforms the ground floor. The kitchen opens into a superb contemporary glazed garden room, its dark-framed structure and pitched glass roof creating a striking contrast with the older house. Used as the dining room, it is flooded with natural light and gives the house a lovely connection with the garden, with doors opening directly outside.
Upstairs, the first floor has two bedrooms and a modern family bathroom. The larger principal bedroom is a generous double, while the second makes a particularly good child’s room, guest room or study. The staircase then continues to the second floor where a further double bedroom sits within the roofspace, complete with extensive built-in eaves storage.
The garden is another real highlight. Landscaped by the current owners, it feels wonderfully established and private, with mature planting wrapping around brick and stone terraces to create a series of intimate places to sit. It is a genuinely lovely little oasis - particularly impressive when you remember that Henley town centre is only moments away.
There is something rather joyful about the whole house; it has warmth, individuality and character, and combines them with genuinely useful space. For anyone wanting to properly embrace Henley life - morning coffee in town, a walk along the river, dinner without worrying about the car and the station within walking distance - Friday Street is very hard to beat.
