Some houses have character. The Old Brewery has history.
Set on Church Street in the very heart of Alcester, this handsome Grade II listed townhouse forms part of the surviving legacy of the town's former brewery – a property whose past is every bit as interesting as its architecture.
Historical records identify The Old Brewery and neighbouring Dorset House as surviving buildings associated with Alcester Brewery, owned by the Haines family and used during the nineteenth century for business offices, retail premises and accommodation.
The Haines family were involved with the brewery from at least the 1860s, with the brewery extensively rebuilt in 1886. It went on to win brewing medals in 1888 and 1890 before being sold by the family in 1899. Brewing eventually ceased in the early twentieth century and the main brewery buildings were demolished during the 1920s, leaving buildings including The Old Brewery as a tangible reminder of this fascinating chapter in Alcester's past.
The Property
Today, behind its elegant period façade lies a wonderfully individual family home arranged over three floors, retaining the proportions and character you would hope to find in a property of this age.
On entering the house, the ground floor opens into a fabulous living and dining room, where deep sash windows bring in plenty of natural light and a feature fireplace provides a natural focal point to the room. There is ample space for both comfortable seating and a generous dining table, creating a sociable room equally suited to everyday family life and entertaining.
The breakfast kitchen has been refitted and incorporates integrated appliances, with French doors opening directly into the private courtyard garden – a lovely connection between the house and its outside space.
Stairs also descend to a substantial cellar with utility area, providing valuable additional storage and further versatility.
The first floor is home to an impressive principal bedroom spanning the width of the property, complemented by a generously proportioned en-suite bathroom. A further double bedroom and separate WC complete this level.
Continue upstairs and the top floor provides two further good-sized double bedrooms together with a shower room, giving the property four bedrooms in total and creating a layout that could work equally well for a family, visiting guests or those needing dedicated home-working space.
Step Outside
The outside space is another of The Old Brewery's surprises.
To the rear lies a large private courtyard garden, providing plenty of room for outdoor dining and entertaining without the maintenance demands of a traditional lawned garden. Its enclosed nature works particularly well with the property's town-centre setting and gives the house its own private outside retreat.
There is also a separate brick-built outbuilding, offering useful storage and exciting potential for a home office, gym, studio or hobby space, subject of course to any necessary planning and listed-building consents.
Gated access leads through to two private parking spaces – something we think is particularly noteworthy for a period property in such a central Alcester location.
A Home in the Heart of Historic Alcester.
And it isn't only the house that comes with history.
Alcester's story stretches back almost two thousand years. A Roman fort was established here around ad 47, with a civilian settlement subsequently developing at the meeting point of important Roman routes. The town sits at the confluence of the Rivers Alne and Arrow and went on to develop into an important trading and market settlement.
That heritage can still be felt today. Alcester's historic centre is characterised by an eclectic collection of timber-framed buildings, Georgian frontages and numerous listed properties, while its independent shops, cafés, restaurants and traditional pubs give the town centre a thriving community atmosphere.
From The Old Brewery, all of this is quite literally on the doorstep. Step outside and you can enjoy the town on foot, whether that's popping out for coffee, meeting friends for dinner or simply wandering through streets that have evolved over centuries.
For those travelling further afield, Stratford-upon-Avon, Redditch and the wider Warwickshire and Worcestershire countryside are readily accessible, combining the charm of historic town-centre living with excellent access to the surrounding area.
A Note From Steve & Ellie
We love houses that have a story, and The Old Brewery certainly has one.
It's difficult not to be drawn in by the history here – knowing that this beautiful townhouse once formed part of Alcester's brewing story makes it feel that little bit more special. But what surprised us most is just how much house there is behind the frontage.
Four bedrooms, accommodation over three floors, a cellar, courtyard garden, outbuilding and two parking spaces, yet you're right in the heart of Alcester.
For us, it's that combination of history, character, space and location that makes The Old Brewery such an exciting home.
