History of the area
Waltham Abbey developed around a religious site with origins extending back more than a thousand years. Harold Godwinson, later King Harold II, commissioned a stone church in the eleventh century, and the subsequent abbey became an important medieval monastic foundation.
The abbey was dissolved in 1540, the last monastic house in England to surrender to the Crown. Its surviving fourteenth-century gatehouse and bridge, together with the church and Abbey Gardens, continue to shape the town’s historic character.
The gardens became part of Lee Valley Regional Park in 1967, bringing the site’s heritage together with public open space and recreation.
Recreational facilities include Waltham Abbey Leisure Centre and local green spaces. Waltham Cross, Cheshunt and Theobalds Grove stations provide rail options in the surrounding area.
