Moments from Wanstead Park/Flats
Tucked away in the heart of Bushwood, moments from acres of open green spaces and woodland, you’ll discover this warm and inviting period home. Fully renovated by the current owners, the house unfolds from a useful lower-ground cellar to a light-filled primary loft suite with city views.
The open-plan downstairs has been designed for both family living and entertaining, centred around a considered kitchen extension where striking sliding doors reveal a Mediterranean-style courtyard garden.
Improvements include upgraded windows, with shutters on the front, new interior doors, wiring, and a Nest-powered heating system, including underfloor heating in the kitchen and bathrooms. A water softener and filtered drinking-water system.
You'll enjoy other design details as you explore the spacious, bright interior, which balances a calming yet uplifting vibe with colourful touches and environmentally friendly paintwork.
The frontage feels refreshingly modern, with the brickwork painted in a soft grey to match the low wall screening the front garden peppered with pretty flowers, where you can sit on the bench to soak up the evening sun. Handy outdoor storage is here, too.
Inside – modern lifestyle with A heritage feel
Open the traditional front door, painted in a dark grey to coordinate with the privacy glass and numbered transom, to enter the hallway. Here, tall walls with picture rails create an immediate sense of space and light, with warm grey tones, a covered radiator, and basket-weave wooden flooring adding characterful flair. A cluster of vintage pendant lights illuminates your way towards a white-painted staircase with a fitted runner carpet and a WC beneath, as well as access to the cellar.
The rich-hued wooden floor flows into a living room distinguished by bold blue walls finished with white picture rails and elegant coving. Full-height wooden shutters adorn a square bay window, creating a lovely spot for a reading nook or cosy seating area, with views of the wood-burning stove framed by a sleek stone surround under the glow of a brass and opal glass chandelier.
Draw back the curtain separating the living from the open-plan kitchen extension, created by a Vitsœ designer, which loops back to the hallway for effortless flow around the home. Bold blue hues continue here on the bespoke cabinets, finished with hand-picked handles, contrasting with durable Corian worktops that end in a breakfast bar. Integrated appliances include a Nexus Rangemaster with an extractor hood and a herringbone tiled splashback, and a concealed fridge-freezer, dishwasher, and washing machine.
Underfloor-heated grey format tiles and black-and-white open shelves pair with vintage black and copper pendants for a warm, monochromatic finish, while mounted spots and globe lights enhance the ambience throughout the day. Anthracite-framed doors, including 2.7m high, low-profile sliding doors with fitted electric blinds, and a partly glazed ceiling flood the kitchen and dining area with sunshine, creating a lovely setting for family mealtimes.
On the first floor, you’ll find three double bedrooms, all fitted with neutral carpets that continue across the landing and walls painted in Benjamin Moore’s 'Metropolitan' – a calming mid-tone grey. The largest bedroom sits at the front, with wooden shutters filtering the soft sunshine through the generous windows, including a wide square bay. Slimline, floor-to-ceiling white panelled wardrobes flank an ornate feature mantelpiece, while the vintage pendant light echoes those downstairs. Additional insulation and soundproofing ensure a peaceful atmosphere for sleep and relaxation.
Shutters appear in the other bedrooms too, and the second double also benefits from a built-in bespoke wardrobe. Opposite a landing storage cupboard is the spot-lit family bathroom featuring a traditional monochrome Savoy suite to complement the patterned heated floor tiles and lush Farrow & Ball ‘Verdigris Green’ walls. A marble-style hexagonal splashback frames a panelled bath with a glass screen, a rainfall shower head, and period-style tapware with a handheld shower attachment.
Back on the landing, a matching staircase, brightened by a skylight and a specially designed triangular window that offers a glimpse of a seasonal neighbouring tree, rises to the spot-lit top-floor suite. Decorated similarly to the bedrooms below and featuring useful eaves storage, this light-filled retreat has fabulous city skyline views, particularly magical on New Year’s Eve.
Japanese-inspired sliding doors reveal an underfloor-heated en suite with a walk-in rainfall shower, Savoy sanitaryware, a traditional heated towel rail, modern tiling and large anthracite windows with fitted blinds. A vanity unit with a counter-top basin and wall-mounted chrome tapware completes the setup.
Outside – private & peaceful
Outside, trees and terracotta walls that almost glow in the sun, topped with horizontal slatted fencing, screen the garden from the hubbub of city life. A stone-tiled and eco-composite terrace sits flush with the house for indoor/outdoor living, lit by exterior lighting for an inviting feel from dusk onwards. Pergola-climbing plants and an array of grasses and shrubs in the brick border, selected by a local professional garden designer, bring wild intrigue to this cosy space.
A note from the owners
‘This home has given us the space to enjoy London and raise a family at the same time. It's such a social space with plenty of places for everyone to unwind. The area is the perfect mix of a community feel and beautiful nature with easy access to the city. This little corner of Bushwood is like a village – the residents' association is wonderful and produces lots of events, local area discounts and a great newspaper, and we very much enjoy a sundowner outside the pub on a summer's day as the kids play in the no-through road streets. We walk or cycle the kids to school in Aldersbrook right the way through the woods every day, which feels rather unique in London.’
