The local area guide to living in Shoreham-by-Sea
Shoreham-by-Sea is located on the south coast of England in West Sussex, and is a seaside town and port. The town and port were first formed in the 11th century by the Normans, and is now a popular fishing destination. Much of Shoreham retains its traditional side, particularly in comparison to its more progressive and modern neighbour, Brighton.
The two standout churches in Shoreham, St Nicolas' Church and St Mary de Haura Church, both have significant history, and date back to the 10th and 11th centuries. Dotted around the historic streets of Shoreham, you will find lovely Victorian terraces, and bungalows from the 30s and the 60s. Shoreham-by-Sea is also home to Shoreham Fort, built in 1857 to defend against Napoleon the Third, it now gives a wide range of activities throughout the year. The South Downs can be found not too far from Shoreham, and are a variety of picturesque chalk hills that overlook the coast. They are widely recognised as one of the most monumental chalk landscapes in the UK.
The cost of property is much more affordable than in Brighton, which is one of the primary reasons it attracts many people to the area. Another factor is the considerable arts and culture scene here, with numerous galleries around the place.

Shoreham-by-Sea is home to around 19,000 people, with a rise in population projected in the coming years. The town has a higher percentage of females, with 53.2% in total. 93.3% of residents are White English, followed by White Other at 2.2%, and White Irish at 0.9%. Ethnic minorities such as Indian only make up 0.4% of the total, while Black African and Black Caribbean are at just 0.1% each. 44.5% of the population are described as being in very good health, followed by 37.1% in good health, and 14.5% as fair.
Shoreham Beach Primary School, Buckingham Park Primary School, and Swiss Gardens Primary School, are all favourably rated by Ofsted, and represent good options to send your children to from the ages of 5-11. Shoreham Academy is a thriving and vibrant secondary school that also offers the chance to take on sixth form courses such as A Levels and BTEC. The University of Brighton and The University of Sussex are not far off as well when it comes to further education.
Shoreham-by-Sea has excellent options for transport. The train station, which is situated only a mile away from the centre of town has a regular service that takes passengers to London in just over an hour. There is also a regular link to Brighton, which is a mere 15 minutes ride. The A27 is also nearby, with the A/M23 a further 15 minutes away.
Shopping in Shoreham-by-Sea is very convenient, as there are a number of retail outlets on hand, as well as markets, offering fresh fruit and vegetables. The principal area for shopping used to be on the High Street, but can now be found near the Railway Station. Most residents decide to venture into Brighton for the bulk of their retail shopping with the shopping centre, Churchill Square, (which has a selection of 80 stores) proving to be a popular choice.
There are a number of cosy, family friendly pubs in Shoreham. The Bridge Inn can be found on the High Street, and has a quaint view of the river, and has a nice selection of seafood options, as well as dishes suitable for vegetarians and vegans. The Crown & Anchor Pub is a more modern looking pub, offering an eclectic choice of food and cocktails, and is also perched just by the riverside.
