Moving home – whether you have bought or are renting the property you are moving to – is a great opportunity to change your energy supplier and find a better deal for you.

Which energy supplier is best?

While it might seem simpler to select from one of the 'big six' energy companies, it's worth comparing deals from all suppliers.

This included the smaller lesser-known energy companies, some of which fare best on renewable energies, as well as price.

You can read more in our guide to the differences between small energy firms versus the big six.

How do I energy supplier when moving home?

The process is easy. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Contact your energy supplier at least 48 hours before your Move date and find out if any exit fees are payable to leave your current contract.
  2. Take the final meter reading and pass it on to your landlord or lettings agent so they can check this against the final bill when it arrives.
  3. Once you've moved into your new home, take the meter reading as soon as possible to make sure you get an accurate first bill.
  4. You'll likely be put onto your new energy supplier's standard tariff, which will probably be its most expensive, so this is the perfect time to look for a new deal on uSwitch.
  5. If you find a better deal, make the switch online and your new supplier will take care of the handover.
