Moving home invariably incorporates plenty of paperwork – and getting this completed correctly and on time can often make all the difference in ensuring a smooth transition.

Who to notify of your change of address

One of the most important tasks when moving home is notifying relevant authorities and bill providers of your change of address.

Get your priorities in order and list everyone you need to notify first, including:

  • Your insurance providers
  • Your employer
  • The electoral register
  • Your doctor and dentist
  • Your new local authority
  • Your bank and credit card companies
  • Your energy and water suppliers
  • The TV licensing agency
  • Your mobile phone provider
  • HMRC

Read our guide, 'How to streamline your change of address' for more useful tips.

Is postal forwarding a good idea?

A simple, short-term solution, which would avoid any correspondence falling through the gaps, is to pay for a postal redirection service. This will automatically forward any mail sent to your old address to your new one for a given period of time.

It’s only a temporary measure but it will provide peace of mind and buy you some time to get everything else in order before notifying all of the relevant people and organisation of your change of address.
