New Homes: Birmingham

Spanning an area of over 80 square miles, Birmingham is the second largest city in England, the home of over a million residents.

A diverse and modern city, its size invites a great deal of diversity. Nightlife in areas like Broad Street draw students and tourists alike, while so too does the Royal Ballet Company and Symphony Orchestra – although less students to the latter option we’d think.

The local economy is on the upswing, with the city investing millions into regenerating Birmingham. Combined with major commercial developments like Brindle Place, Millennium Point, and the Bullring shopping centre, it’s fast becoming popular with both business and young families alike.

Local investment and schemes

There’s a heavy amount of investment in Birmingham these days, thanks in part to growth of 150,000 by 2031. In preparation, the council has been hard at work securing an investment of £600 million to update the New Street Station, while 51,000 new homes are due to be constructed throughout the city.

Another, more controversial plan,that has just been given the green light is the Birmingham Development Plan. This involves converting hundreds of acres of green belt countryside space to residential areas. Birmingham County Council plans to build a massive new neighbourhood in Langley with 6,000 houses.

These efforts come about as part of the larger Big City Plan, first launched in September 2010. It’s the council’s 20 year vision for improvement of the city centre, including improving the city’s walkability, sustainability, and transport.

The scheme promises to include Birmingham’s heritage in its future regeneration, aiming to help regenerate and improve, rather than ignore its local past.

Major developments: new homes

One hot development at the moment is Grand Square. Located in the Perry Barr/Birchfield area, it’s been identified by the Government as one of Birmingham city’s three growth points.

This new student housing provides a sound investment opportunity, with single, double, and studios available. They haven’t skimped on the amenities either, with the complex including a library, gymnasium, swimming pool, and high tech facilities.

Birmingham Properties Group has also unveiled major development plans for students, including Kensington House. This includes 132 studios, a cinema room, gym, and secure parking. The group has also purchased a site in Birmingham’s Southside, where 70 apartments will be constructed, and another site in Moseley where 50 apartments are due to be built.

A more traditional selection of new homes has been constructed in Perry Barr by Mansell Homes. The Founders is a development situated off Birchfield Road, including 1, 2, 3, and 4 bedroom houses as well as a well-manicured park.

Major developments: Redevelopments

One area that has been successfully regenerated is Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. This historic neighbourhood dates back over 250 years, and remains the home for over 500 jewellery businesses.

Yet as part of its refurbishment, new townhouses and apartments have cropped up in converted buildings and vacant lots. This has transformed it from a commercial quarter into a trendy new urban village, complete with hip bars and restaurants.

Local hubs

Solihull was voted the best place to live in the UK by Uswitch.com readers, due to its attractive Tudor architecture and green spaces. It’s a popular destination for commuters and families, positioned just nine miles outside of the city centre. Local new homes include the Dickens Manor development from Bellway.

Stratford upon Avon is another picturesque town within 20 miles of both Birmingham and neighbouring Coventry, a town well known to anyone who enjoys history. It boasts listed buildings and a gorgeous riverside setting, as well as new developments like Montague Court from Avon Homes or Midsummer Park from Taylor Wimpey. Harborne and Edgbaston are also leafy suburbs attracting residents in search of new homes within close proximity to Birmingham.
