The castle was built during the Roman age in order to protect the town of Todi, which was called Colonia Julia Fida Tuder. The main watching tower was built in a strategic position and between the 10th and the 13th centuries it was incorporated into a fortress; moreover, in this period further towns were built.
During the Middle Age, the towers were inhabited by soldiers and the castle became a reference point also for the pilgrims from North Europe who wanted to go to Rome.
In the 14th century the castle was converted into a monastery, which was later abandoned and became subject of quarrel among local lords.
The castle has a square layout with a surface of 865 sqm and it is laid out on three levels, composed as follows.
