The building was dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose cult began in Spain in the 13th century, but only spread to Portugal after the Battle of Salado in 1340, and several shrines were built in honour of her in Portugal.
The legend of Our Lady of Guadalupe is associated with navigators and sailors, and with fighting Muslims and rescuing captured Christians, which could explain the installation of a shrine in her honour in the Western Algarve, an extreme part of the country that was often plagued by Islamic pirates.
