Convento das Bernardas also known as the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Piedade de Tavira, began to be built in 1509 as a thanksgiving for the lifting of the Moorish siege of Arzila in the same year. The building was completed in 1528 and in 1530 it was handed over to the nuns of the Cicstercian order. The buildings were damaged in the earthquake of 1755 and by fire in 1863, one year earlier, in 1862, the monastery had been dissolved and all its assets had been transferred to the state. In the years that followed, the remaining buildings served as a mill, bakery, barbershop and headquarters for the Tavira Cycling Club. In 2009, exactly 500 years after the Convention was built, the reconstruction of the ruins began.
